Elvis Costello's third album, released in 1979, was his third masterpiece in two years. With spacious arrangements and a variety of textures, Armed Forces introduced sophisticated pop to the burgeoning New Wave. Features "Oliver's Army" and "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding." Armed Forces is part of a very special series of reissues. The folks at Rhino have long been fans of Elvis Costello and are pleased to present -- in cooperation with the artist himself -- each classic album in a beautiful new package that includes: ß An entire bonus disc featuring an assortment of outtakes, demos, live performances, and previously unreleased material. ß Remastered sound. ß New liner notes written by Elvis Costello himself. ß Complete lyrics. ß Archival photos and reproductions of memorabilia.

A key album in Costello's development for the way it branched off into the ABBA-influenced pure pop of "Accidents Will Happen" and "Oliver's Army," the sunny Beatlesque melodies of "Busy Bodies," and the soulful ballad "Party Girl," ARMED FORCES is consistently rated among the finest works in the singer-songwriter's canon. | | The two-disc ARMED FORCES: DELUXE EDITION contains all the songs from the expanded Rykodisc CD from the early 1990s, which featured key b-sides such as the sprightly "Talking in the Dark" and the previously vinyl-only LIVE AT HOLLYWOOD HIGH EP. This set then adds five more live songs recorded during the same concert, and alternate takes of the album tracks "Chemistry Class," "Big Boys" and "Busy Bodies." Similarly, Costello's wry, self-deprecating liner notes are longer and more detailed for this release. | | Into the third batch of Rhino's deluxe edition reissue campaign of the Elvis Costello catalog, a familiar pattern certainly began to emerge. Each disc has more tracks and better liner notes than the Demon/Rykodisc reissues, but each feels anti-climatic, delivering less than the original reissues even as it offers more. Why is that? Well, the Ryko reissues had all the heavy-hitters -- all the B-sides, the bonus EPs, the demos that truly matter. This is especially the case of Armed Forces, whose second disc's best material is what was on the Ryko edition, at least more or less. What is truly noteworthy on this issue is a bunch of unreleased material from the Live at Hollywood High sessions, all as excellent as those on the released EP. It's not earth-shaking material -- even though the version of "Stranger in the House" is superb -- but it's good to have, better than the alternate versions of "Busy Bodies" and "Big Boys," which interrupt the flow of excellent B-sides and outtakes like "Tiny Steps," "Talking in the Dark," and "Wednesday Week" (inadvertently proving the superiority of the sequencing on the Ryko edition). To be sure, if you don't own the previous reissue of Armed Forces, this is the one to get, but the overall quality of the new material -- in fact, the lack of new material -- means that those satisfied with the Ryko version don't need to run out and get this version. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | | Into the third batch of Rhino's Deluxe Edition reissue campaign of the Elvis Costello catalog, a familiar pattern certainly began to emerge.
