 Editor's Note
Michael Bay, the master of the big-budget blockbuster, directs this action film that is packed with emotion. With a planet-killing asteroid on a collision course with Earth, it's up to a motley crew of scientists and oil drillers (yes, oil drillers) to save the earth. With 18 days to impact, a team from NASA (led by Billy Bob Thornton) frantically tries to find a solution but ends up turning to an outside contractor. Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his team of oilmen are called upon to save the planet as only they can. ARMAGEDDON may boast impressive special effects, but it's the cast--including Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Steve Buscemi, and Owen Wilson--that gives the film its humor and heart. Tyler's father Steven Tyler and his band Aerosmith contributed the Oscar-nominated hit "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" to the soundtrack.
 Plot Summary
Grossing more than 200 million dollars domestically during its initial box office run in 1998, Bay's loud, fast spectacle is a love-it or hate-it archetype of the big budget studio action film at the century's end. Made with lots of money ($140 million!), a strong cast and tons of special effects, ARMAGEDDON tells the tale of a team of oilmen called in by the president to land on a Texas-sized asteroid approaching Earth and blast it into pieces before it ends life as we know it. Huge plot holes, some of the quickest cutting seen in film, and occasionally unconvincing special effects will not deter those who approach it seeking two and a half hours of full-throttle, flag waving cinematic rush.

4 of 5 Thursday, February 17, 2000 Andrew from Chicago , Ill
I loved this movie simply because the special effects made it. The acting was not as bad as i
thought it would be but the good thing that makes
a sci-fi flick great is humor. Humor just makes the movie more enjoyable. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Another one for your Library Sunday, January 09, 2000 A Viewer from San Francisco
There must be a reason why this movie is the number one box office hit in 1998! Effects, sound and Michael Bay's directorial style (Bad Boys & The Rock) makes this movie one to have if you are a DVD collector. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Set Back and Enjoy Tuesday, January 04, 2000 Dave Williams from Normal, Illinois
I just spent the last few mins reading all of the reviews for this movie. To be honest, I didn't realize that Hollywood made movies that are unbelievable(sarcastic). So explosions aren't supposed to happen in space, big deal just enjoy the movie. Movies are predictable, and they always will be, the ones that aren't predictable go down in history as the greats, but again that is why they are great because there aren't that many of them. I like this movie I own this movie, and everytime I see it on cable I'm drawn too it. The actors did a very good job, and you really get a feel for some of the characters lives by the sub plots. Set back and enjoy the ride, and let Hollywood do what they have been doing for years, thinking of ways to entertain us in ways that they haven't done before. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great Movie Sunday, January 02, 2000 Newman from NJ
I thought it was a fun movie to watch. Although unrealistic, the special effects and such make up for it. Great special features. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Reality!?!? It's a movie! Sunday, November 28, 1999 JohnJ168 from Issaquah, Wa.
If you want the reality of space and physics...go to school, or read a textbook. The whole point of movies is to entertain, and help you escape reality. This movie does that with great effects, a fast pace, and BIG EXPLOSIONS! You want Shakespeare, read Hamlet! You want physics, buy a textbook! You want to have some fun, get this movie!! 5 of 5 Who cares about the real world!! Saturday, November 27, 1999 Just a fan from Fort Worth, TEXAS
To all you people who cut this movie down because of its unlacking ability to be true, get over it. This is a movie. Its supposed to be entertainment. Movies entertain more than anything else in this world. But, you are entitled to you own opinion. I don't agree cutting down a movie because it can't possibly be true. Thats what makes it 'FICTION'. Look up the word, it will make sense to you then. This movie is great. It has great special effects, laughter, sorrow, anger, and an awesome sound track. If this movie was made to be factual, we better all duck. But its not, its a movie, entertainment, and 'FICTION'. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Get Real ? It's a MOVIE! Monday, November 22, 1999 Scott from Mound, Minnesota
It is a very entertaining movie at that. The characters play well and the story moves fast. Bruce Willis plays his character much the way he does his others but if you like him like I do it is great! If you're a realist you shouldn't be looking to this type of movie anyway, go watch a documentary and stay out of theaters and away from Hollywood movies! This movie is visually pleasing and fun to watch. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 A movie is meant to ENTERTAIN (Lighten up People!) Monday, November 08, 1999 A Viewer from New Orleans
When I sat down to watch this movie, I didn't have a Physics Today or Popular Science Magazine to compare. I just wanted to be entertained. This movie was that and more. I loved the action, the humor, the romance and the suspense. This is a great SCIENCE FICTION movie. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Glad we have physics experts here. Saturday, October 30, 1999 BigDaddyMack from U.S.A.
I never knew there were so many physics experts into movies. They must have time in between thier anti-matter/quark studies. I'm wondering how they would know the elemental mass makeup of the 'FICTITIOUS' asteroid in this movie. Or why they would waste their time trying to reason out an ALLAROUND GREAT MOVIE!!!!!! This movie was good in MANY aspects! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 I loved it Sunday, October 10, 1999 Val from glen burnie, MD
It wasn't the best thought out movie, but it was exciting and sweet. All the people in the row behind were on the edge of their seats, literally. This movie made men cry. stop analyzing it and enjoy it as entertainment. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Rocket Scientist Review Wednesday, September 22, 1999 DavidT from Houston, TX
This movie is GREAT!!!! I've seen it, many, many times. Yes the physics of the movie are all wrong...who cares! If you want reality, read the paper or watch the news. If you want a rocking good movie check this one out.
And as a matter of fact, I am a rocket scientist. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 I no longer respect Criterion Saturday, September 18, 1999 JBoat from Atlanta, GA
If you are under 14 years old and/or have no sense of physical law you might like this movie. Loud explosions and mini guns mounted atop moon rovers are the order of the day. Don't ask why!!! Just watch stuff go BOOM! There are very few movies that I would not see again even if it were free but this is one.
Do yourself a favor and watch Spartacus, Predator, The Good The Bad And The Ugly, Starship Troopers, The Ghost And The Darkness. Because sometimes you have to know what is GOOD before you can discern what is BAD! Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 AWFUL! Monday, September 06, 1999 Orpheus from Nashville, Tennessee
This was one of the worst movies made in the last ten years. Armageddon is too self-involved and takes itself too seriously. It is a movie made for the brain dead. By the way, _some_ people from San Jose should learn to spell before calling others 'idoits' (as spelled above.) I rest my case. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 BEST MOVIE EVER!!! Tuesday, August 17, 1999 Kit and Kat from Essex Jct., VT
We LOVE this movie. It is perfect in every way imaginable. Liv and Benny (we feel we've seen this movie enough times to be on a first name basis with the actors) are awesome together and all the other actors do an equally wonderful job. You'll experience every possible emotion in just over two and a half hours. If you haven't seen this movie, rent it now. NOW!!! Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 amazingly extravagant Sunday, July 25, 1999 comicsboy from austin, texas
this movie is what hollywood movies are all about. or what they should be about. lots of explosions and a ridiculously over the top story. bruckhiemer is the guy that demands that each of his directors use yellow filters in the day and blue filters at night. (see: bad boys, top gun, days of thunder, etc etc.) if you're into this sort of thing, whether seriously or ironically, you'll love the criterion version. lots of stuff on it. how did this movie make the criterion? obviously, someone there also has an ironic sense of humour. 3 of 5 Nothing to write home about Saturday, July 24, 1999 vrsix from Woodland Hills, CA
Completely formulaic and utterly predictable. However, nice special effects and decent action. Overall, an entertaining movie but nothing to stirring. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Must have a good Sub Woofer for this one. Wednesday, July 21, 1999 Mark K. from Boston Ma.
This one can really test a sub woofer. Thunderous sound effects/track.
Given that it is hard for H-Wood to be unpredictable, it is not hard to take the predicability of Armag.
Don't buy it unless you have something better than an 'All-in-One' home theater system. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Smash Hit! Sunday, July 04, 1999 Trigga from New York, N.Y.
The movie was one of the best summer films. The cinematography was the best I have ever seen in a movie. Micheal Bay's editing technic & cinematography makes the movie a great dvd buy. Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE Tuesday, June 29, 1999 Dan from Honolulu, Hawaii
This movie was perhaps the worst movie in years. It preys upon easily stirred emotions, cultural cliches, and common prejudices. The movie's premise can be summed up simply: let's get the most screwed up improbable idiots together and have them save the world. TYPICAL JERRY BRUCKHEIMER. Just in case you didn't know you were supposed to be emotional, let's throw in stirring music to remind you. Then, just for those few who may not get into the movie, let's appeal to their patriotic side by letting Americans save the world while the rest of the world sits on their thumbs. And on top of that, characters that were inconsistent and ridiculous. Shall I continue? I'm disturbed by the amount of money this hollow black hole of a movie made. Eye candy, but no soul. 5 of 5 Movie Magic Saturday, June 05, 1999 W Thai from Somewhere
Wow . I can't begin to sing the praises of this movie. The casting was great. This movie combines the elements of romance, drama, suspense, and of course who could forget the action to perfection. Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, and Ben Affleck show off their superb talents to make this not only a movie to be watched but one to be experienced. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Bay and Bruckheimer do it again. Thursday, May 13, 1999 Troy Stiffler from Phoenix AZ
Pure genius. That is the only way that I can describe this movie. The powerful acting, action, romance, and sadness blend so well that the movie seem beyond perfect. WARNING: don't listen to what the critics had to say about this delight because this is, in my opinon, as good as moviemaking gets. Was this review helpful?
