I have wasted hours and hours calling, trial and error, and reading multiple manuals and I still cant get it do what I want. First of all if you want to play any files from Ipods or mpeg files you have to drop another 40bucks on plugins. If that is not enough on the dvr station wont work unless you have wi fi at your house (which I dont). Also slow start up and the website gave me wrong advice on how to calibrate. So long story short
$80 for dvr
$40 for plug ins
$270 for Archos
you have a slow pos version of an touch Ipod!

I got the Archos 604 for $229; overall I've been happy with it, but it does have some issues. The pros are that it has pretty good storage space (30gb is a lot of movie space if you compress it well), the screen is very pretty, and it's a nice little unit to carry around for trips. The UI is OK, and the buttons make sense once you get used to them.
The bad is that it didn't support the .wmv audio type that my software uses to create videos, and it's support for other video formats is sparse. The .avi format it does support that my software also uses ends up with poor quality video; an alternative is to use .vob files (the codec for which is a $20 add on for the Archos to play back with) for quality, but the files are four times as big in that format.
Another negative is that it won't charge unless it is turned on; this cost me the battery going out on a long plane trip because it wasn't fully charged before the flight. It also takes hours to charge.
I haven't used the PVR functionality yet.
If you can get this unit for under $250, know the video formats that you use work with it and have acceptable quality, then this is a good unit to have for the money.

This device allows you to record TV programs to the player via a Docking Station which is sold separately. Without the Docking Station, all you can do is transfer media files from a USB cable to your computer. Overall with the Docking Station it's quite pricey, but it does the job and overall satisfied. Can replace your VCR.
Pros: easy to use, great video quality & sound via earphones, plays MP3s, WMAs, JPGs and AVI/MP4s. (WMVs & MPEGs require codecs sold separately). Portable, great for travel. Rechargeable battery via USB or power adapter (with Docking station). Internal operating system upgradable via website.
Cons: The built-in speaker is weak. Battery can get hot while charging. Program scheduler is buggy - no "every week" setting so to set timer you'll have to set it every week. Recorder can over-record - ie. you set it to record for 60 mins and it continues to record for 2+ hours until you press stop (once in a while). Pricey - video codecs and Docking Stations sold separately. Was this review helpful?
