The influence of the Appalachia region on American music is hard to overstate--almost every genre of popular music from country to blues to rock & roll has been shaped by Appalachian folk in one way or another. This disc admirably attempts an overview (a Herculean task) by including everything from Seneca Indian chants to modern singer-songwriters such as Molly Slemp and from early country bluesmen like Carl Martin to religious vocalists like the Traditional Sacred Harp Singers. The highlights belong to the more noteworthy names--Jean Ritchie, Dock Boggs, and Ralph Stanley among them--but relative newcomers such as bluegrass supergroup Blue Highway and neo-old-time band Clack Mountain String Band prove themselves worthy of inclusion next to the legends. | Producer: Ron Short; Ron Short | Engineer: Alan Maggard; Ron Short |
