 Editor's Note
A restless worker ant changes roles with a soldier ant in order to get the girl, who just happens to be a princess. The animation is breathtaking in this story of true love amid a totalitarian state.

| | Professional Reviews | Rolling Stone "...ANTZ is refreshingly naughty and nice..." 10/29/1998 p.80Sight and Sound "...Very special visual effects....The two most impressive achievements of ANTZ are its rendering of character and multiplicity..." 12/01/1998 p.41-2 Entertainment Weekly "...Grown-up....Subversion slips by swiftly at 24 cels per second..." -- Rating: A- 02/12/1999 pp.84-5 Premiere "...Dazzling computer animation and inspired casting..." 10/01/1998 p.29 New York Times "...Its shrewd computer animators have great fun seeing the world from an ant's-eye point of view....Mr. Allen sounds wonderfully invigorated by the chance to play a guy with all those legs..." 10/02/1998 p.E12 Box Office "...A wonderfully entertaining animated comedy....The actors' voices fit very nicely with the ants they play, and the animation is highly imaginative..." 11/01/1998 p.139 Apollo Leisure Guide 8 of 10 As a technical achievement, Antz fills one with awe. The computer-generated graphics are remarkable; there are several breathtaking scenes, with the most ambitious being the carnival-like ride that Z and Princess Bala (Sharon Stone) take while gummed to a young lad's sneaker. Music is also used repeatedly and cleverly for comic effect ('High Hopes' closes the film). Lastly, the ants themselves are amazing creations, combining accurate physiognomy with detailed characteristics to produce unique, easily identifiable insects. New York Times 7 of 10 Allen sounds wonderfully invigorated by the chance to play a guy with all those legs -- and all those ant-specific reasons for angst...Antz works best just showing off its prodigious voice talent (Anne Bancroft, Danny Glover, Jennifer Lopez and Christopher Walken are also in the cast) and playing lightheartedly with the curious possibilities of a buggy world. - Janet Maslin

5 of 5 Great animated feature for grownups. Thursday, March 16, 2000 makita from Santiago, Chile
Antz is aimed to an audience that has no choices for animated features. It's either kids' stuff or tacky adult stuff. Excellent animation and sound, well developed characters and a clever script gives to this little gem a future cult status. Buy it! Was this review helpful?

after seeing antz, i was very disappointed by a bug's life. not only is the story of antz much better than bug's life, but the attention to graphic detail is so much better in antz that bug's life just pales in comparison. Was this review helpful?

This movie is really geared towards adults. Kids will not understand it, and may enjoy it, but watching it with their parents make make the older types in the room who actaully get the sometimes off color jokes a tad uncomfortable. It's also pretty violent at times. This movie had AWFUL marketing. It's not really a kids movie at all, but a delightfully funny comedy that happens to be about Ants. For straightforward children's fare, see A Bug's Life, which along with MUCH MUCH better animation has a kinder sweeter brand of humor. I recommend that adults stick with ANTZ. As usual Woody Allen delivers a movie that is totally tacky and meaningless. I did buy this movie thinking that the way it was advertised it would be appropriate for my 8 year old. But I was soooooo discusted with it that I got the store to let me return it and buy A Bugs Life in place of it. I will say thanks to the people of Antz for this experience, I now check the movie out thoroughly before I buy it. Of course I now know not to by ANY movie with Woody Allen associated with it. Of course, what can you expect from a man with no morals that he sleeps with his wifes daughter!!!!!! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 A really good movie and superior to Monday, July 26, 1999 A Viewer from Phoenix, Arizona
This movie is geared towards adults, although kids can enjoy it too. Bug's Life was too much of a silly, classic Disney-style movie for me to enjoy it. One bit of warning: I couldn't get it to not display the captions on my computer. Some 'bug' in the software I guess! Hah! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Fantastic. Saturday, July 17, 1999 miloh from St. George UT
Fantastic animation. Step aside Disney there's a whole new generation of animators out there that can spin a tale and be more realistic. At least these antz have the correct alotment of legs. Thumbs up (to steal a cliche') for antz. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Give ole disney a kick in the ..... Wednesday, June 16, 1999 John from Bloomsburg Pa
Antz proves that disney is not the most formidable animation production company. They were able to get Antz out and viewed to a larger audience than bugs. For all of disneys attention to detail, they missed one critcal thing...ants have three sets of legs. aside fron the technical jargon, Antz gives kids a view that is easilly accepted and understood while giving us parents a little subtle humor that our youngin's will not understand for another 10 to 15 years. Any way you slice it, Antz is a class act!!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Witty! Sunday, June 06, 1999 Kevin from Stanford, CA
I thought this was an extremely entertaining
film. Woody Allen's lines were hilarious and the
animation was first rate. I think it is superior
to A Bug's Life. Was this review helpful?
