| | | Features: Gift Set, Box Set, DVD Contains the Anthony Hopkins classics LEGENDS OF THE FALL, THE MASK OF ZORRO, and REMAINS OF THE DAYLEGENDS OF THE FALL: 1994 Oscar winner: Best Cinematography. Based on the novella by Jim Harrison, this sweeping romantic epic is about the Ludlow brothers--two men (Brad Pitt, Aidan Quinn) in love with the same woman (Julia Ormond). Also starring Anthony Hopkins. Directed by Edward Zwick (The Siege). Screenplay by Susan Shilliday and Bill Wittliff. THE MASK OF ZORRO: A sweeping romantic adventure of love and honor, tragedy and triumph set against Mexico's fight for independence. Twenty years have past since Don Diego de la Vega (Hopkins) fought oppression as the legendary hero, Zorro. Now he must find a successor and he chooses Alejandro Murietta (Banderas), a bandit with a troubled past who he must, somehow, transform into the fearless fighter he once had been. Then, armed with sword, whip, mask and the jet-black stallion, Tornado, the new Zorro must stop tyrant Raphael Montero, newly returned from Spain with a plot to actually buy California and enslave the populous to work in his mines. REMAINS OF THE DAY: Oscar-winners Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) and Emma Thompson (Howards End) reunite with the acclaimed Merchant Ivory filmmaking team for this extraordinary and moving story of blind devotion and repressed love. Hopkins stars as Stevens, the perfect English butler - an ideal carried by him to fanatical lengths, as he serves his master Lord Darlington, beautifully played by James Fox (The Servant). Darlington, like many other members of the British establishment in the 1930s, is duped by the Nazis into trying to establish a rapport between themselves and the British government. Thompson stars as the estate's housekeeper, a high-spirited, strong-minded young woman who watches the goings-on upstairs with horror. Despite her apprehensions, she and Stevens gradually fall in love, though neither will admit it, and only give vent to their charged feelings via fierce arguments. Marvelously acted by a supporting cast that includes Christopher Reeve and Hugh Grant. "[Remains] The cast...is so uniformly good, it completes the sense of seamlessness, like a perfectly realized banquet." Desson Howe, Washington Post "[Legends] ...a gorgeous anthem to an American West that never was." Rita Kempley, Washington Post "[Zorro] ...a lot of zest, humor, energy and swordplay..." Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

| | Professional Reviews | Rolling Stone 9 of 10 [Remains] it's an adaptation of the superb 1988 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro about an aging English butler looking back at his past as he drives across the country on a rare holiday. Detractors will see the usual parade of repressed feelings in a Masterpiece Theatre setting. Those who look closer will find one of the best films of the year -- a stinging comedy of manners set against a background of political and emotional turmoil. - Peter Travers Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10 [Legends] It's not that the movie is bad. It's pretty good, in fact, with full-blooded performances and heartfelt melodrama. It's that the material is so cheerfully old-fashioned it makes Giant look subtle. This is the kind of big, robust Western love story that just begs to be filmed--which, come to think of it, it has been... The movie is a showcase for acting, and in addition to Ormond and Hopkins, it also shows how strong Aidan Quinn and Brad Pitt are, in roles that have inescapable parallels to the Rock Hudson and James Dean characters in Giant... Legends of the Fall is not a Serious Movie, despite the profound sentiments of its narration and the classical ironies of its plot. It is a high-class horse opera--emphasis on opera, with an abundance of operatic coincidences, passions, loves, losses, overwrought arias and heart-wrenching soliloquies. On that basis it is enormously entertaining... - Roger Ebert L.A. Times 8 of 10 [Zorro] With good chemistry between Banderas and Zeta-Jones, especially in their numerous comic/passionate moments, this is one film that knows what to take seriously and what to leave alone. - Kenneth Turan
