Notes & Personnel Info |  | The Putumayo label is well known for putting out enchanting compilations of world music, and ANIMAL PLAYGROUND continues that tradition with a twist. A 13-track trip around the globe, ANIMAL PLAYGROUND collects songs about animals (many of which have fantastical stories attached to them) from different cultures, making for one of the most intriguing and delightful children's albums to come along in a while. "Contingo do Sapo" is the story of a singing frog put to a Brazilian forro beat, while Italy's Quarterro Cetra do an uptempo version of "Old MacDonald" (in Italian, of course). There are English-language offerings as well, but the entire disc offers non-stop singalong fun. | | A collection of playful, kid-friendly songs from around the world, Putumayo Kids Presents: Animal Playground is a nice way to give kids age-appropriate music that's not dumbed down and also exposes them to different cultures and languages. The U.S. is the most heavily represented country here, with four different contributions (Canada and Australia each have one), but also present are the delightful "L'Otorhinoc?ros" from the French group Les P'tits Loups de Jazz and the Italian version of "Old McDonald," "Nella Vecchia Trattoria," by the Quartetto Cetra. Animal Playground may not be the album you pull out when your kids are finally in bed, but while they're awake, it's a nice one to have on. ~ Marisa Brown |
