When the host of New York's Hot 97 debuted in 2001 with UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, it was plain that she had something of her own to offer to the hip-hop world. Like its predecessor, ANIMAL HOUSE features a bevy of Martinez's famous friends, but her own voice and style are front and center throughout. Martinez's no-nonsense rhyming is ably supported by constantly surprising and inventive production, as on the emphasis track "If I Could Go," which mixes a Latin-inflected guitar line with synths that resemble nothing so much as the Microsoft e-mail alert tones. Fat Joe, Kelis, and others add their personal touches to the album, but it's Martinez who shines the brightest here. |
