 Editor's Note
Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tautou) is a young woman who glides through the streets of Paris as quietly as a mouse. With wide eyes and a tiny grin, she sees the world in a magical light, discovering minor miracles every day. A shy and reserved person whose favorite moments are spent alone skimming stones into the water, Amélie was raised by a pair of eccentrics who falsely diagnosed her with a heart problem at the age of six and so limited her exposure to the outside world. Now a free and independent woman, Amélie wears a bob that curls in every direction and dresses in red. With a job in a café and an aptitude for spying on her neighbors, Amélie entertains herself by enacting a series of homemade, kindhearted practical jokes. She returns a long-forgotten box of childhood knickknacks to its proper owner, she sends her father's garden troll on a trip around the world, and she creates a love connection at the café between the hypochondriac druggist and a beer-drinking old grouch. But when the day is done, Amélie finds one stone unturned, and decides to work her magic on the quirky object of her affections, Nino Quincampoix (Matthieu Kassovitz), whom she has never met.Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (who codirected DELICATESSEN and THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN with Marc Caro) presents AMÉLIE, an aesthetically gorgeous and inventive film. The rich, glowing color scheme is offset by flashbacks in black and white archival footage that give short biographies of each character. A soft-spoken narrator guides viewers through this enlightening fairy tale, which sometimes speeds through the streets and other times drifts in slow motion. AMÉLIE is humorous, questioning, and strange, and it will change the lives of all who watch it, if only for a short while after leaving Amélie's world.

You see it, and later when you think about it, you smile... It is so hard to make a nimble, charming comedy. So hard to get the tone right and find actors who embody charm instead of impersonating it. It takes so much confidence to dance on the tightrope of whimsy. 5 of 5 Great movie! Thursday, May 06, 2004 A Viewer from San Diego, CA
Like all the other reviewers here of Amelie, I have to give this the highest rating available, 5 stars! Funny and delightful with lots of twists. It all ties together in one way or another, although you don't see that until it is finished. Highly recommend seeing this, you will appreciate this movie in many different ways. Not your typical Hollywood movie for sure, it's a few steps beyond that. Quirky characters add to the uniqueness of this film. What a great, great movie. Can't praise it enough. Saw it on DVD. 5 of 5 A wonderful movie! Sunday, December 22, 2002 A Viewer from Troy, MI
Amelie was a refreshing change from American cinematography. Light-hearted, funny, and an all-around "feel-good" movie! Was this review helpful?

I was lying in bed, half asleep when I started watching this movie, and the fact that I had to read subtitles that went too fast with the quick french narration didn't help. By the end of the movie, however, I was sitting up in front of the TV, with eyes wide open, mesmorized. The movie crept up on me and left me sleepless. It is refreshingly original in its cinematography, coupled with fantastic acting. The movie is as effective as it is original. It will never be extraneous in anyone's video collection (dare I say), as it is in a class by itself. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Outstanding Movie!! Wednesday, July 17, 2002 Dave S. from Marlboro, NJ
This movie is absolutely great! It's refreshing, new, different, comical, funny, and simply amazing. The storyline is wonderful: keeps you guessing and wondering while revealing information at all the right moments. The cinematography is different, but refreshing in its divergence from typical American cinematography. The lead actress does an outstanding job protraying all the quirks of the character. This movie is a must-see again and again!! It is everything you'd look for in a foreign film. New and refreshing filmmaking! Was this review helpful?

I haven't came across a movie where I felt good about life and people for a long time. This is not only a feel-good movie, but a movie where you can appreciate even the bad things in life.
This movie gives me hope for the film industry. While movies specifically targets horror, comedy, romance, special affects, drama, etc, this movie has all of this and more! I can't imagine anybody not enjoy this movie as much as I have. Was this review helpful?

Amelie is the first foreign movie among those I have watched which I think is great. A funny, dramatic and romantic plot. The storyline is not complicated but still very gripping. Excellent photography and film shots. The colors used throughout the whole movie are incredible, making it just like an art film. It is the kind of movie that you want to sit down, relax and watch with your lover. If you haven't watched this movie in the theater, be sure you don't miss it on video. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fantastic! Wednesday, May 22, 2002 A Viewer from Belmont Shore, CA
“Amelie” is a really excellent movie. I recommend it highly to foreign-film fanatics and Hollywood fans alike. In fact, this is an excellent movie to introduce your “dude, foreign films suck” friends to a foreign movie without milking their patience. You might even get them to imagine a world where movies don't require car chases and large-breasted women...at least for the duration of the movie :) Was this review helpful?

This film helped me fall in Love with the Cinema once again. The US market has been enduring such appallingly dreadful movies lately that it’s a small phenomenon that Amelie successfully carved a small piece of screen space for itself (despite its International success.) Quirky filming style, imaginative details, amiable characters, make for a solid, feel-good story to arouse elation and mitigate your heart. Audrey Tautou, the French actress playing the lead character, is a compelling, gorgeous creature of exquisiteness. This disk will be a extraordinary addition to any cultivated collection. If you have ever seen "Delicatessen" or "City of Lost Children" which are both great movies by the same directors. Then you will love Amelie. It is truly an entertaining movie that expands your imagination. Get Amelie for sure. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 I can't wait until this is released! Wednesday, April 24, 2002 skeddy from San Diego, CA
Wow - this is my new all-time favorite movie! This movie left me feeling silly and happy and impish all at once. Amelie is a character I can completely relate to: She is a good and nice person, but still delights in playing little tricks on people. I loved the music and the cinematography; they made the movie even better. I walked out of the theatre wishing I could go back to see it again and again. Was this review helpful?

This movie was just incredible, I was not able to get up for ten minutes after the movie had ended becuase I was still absorbing it. It's funny, romantic, cute, and being in French just makes it better. You dont need to know french though. The body language tells the story, but the subtitles help. Was this review helpful?
