The AMD Opteron processor, enabling simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing, represents the landmark introduction of AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture. The AMD Opteron processor is designed to run existing 32-bit applications with outstanding performance and offers customers a simplified migration path to 64-bit computing. This evolutionary processor provides a dramatic leap forward in compatibility, performance, investment protection, and reduced total cost of ownership.

At this point if you own a 939 motherboard this is the fastest and possibly last chance you will get to buy an Opteron CPU. They did make a 185 Opteron but it has been gone for some months now. I installed it in less than 5 minutes, and with a decent cooler it runs at 89F idle 104F full load after 1 hr, with 72F ambient room temp. If you have an older slower CPU this one will max out your 939 socket based system. It will not beat the newer, faster AM2, 2+ or 3 cpu's however, but will make a fine gamer, or encoder for everyday use as well as all the other less demanding tasks we all do each day.
