| The latest album project from Gary Allan, Alright Guy, is his fourth major label release and the second album project of Gary's on which producers Mark Wright and Tony Brown have collaborated. Wright and Brown first teamed up to produce Smoke Rings In The Dark. In addition to Wright and Brown, long time friend and co-writer Odie Blackmon is noted as associate producer on the cut "I Don't Look Back". The first single from Alright Guy, "Man Of Me", is charging up the singles charts. Alright Guy sold over 30,000 copies during its first week of release rocketing it to the #4 position on the Billboard Country Album Chart. A great singer sounds like they've climbed inside the song and are living it as they sing; there's no distance between their vocal and the song's emotion. When Allan sings, he sounds like he's down with the dust and sweat and compromise of everyday life. No high-glam stylings here--what you hear is what you get, and you get it right from the heart.
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Personnel: Gary Allan (vocals, guitar); Jake Kelly, Joe Manuel, John Willis (acoustic guitar); Brent Rowan (electric guitar); Robby Turner (steel guitar); Hank Singer (mandolin, fiddle); Steve Nathan (keyboards); Michael Rhodes (bass); Chad Cromwell (drums); Harry Stinson, John Wesley Ryles (background vocals). | | Producers: Tony Brown, Mark Wright, Odie Blackmon. | | In today's climate of disposable, prepackaged country stars, fans can be forgiven for not expecting very much of a performer hyped as "the surfing cowboy." Yet Gary Allan, a native Californian with a clear affection and aptitude for the music of Merle Haggard and George Strait, is more than a tag line and a pretty face. On ALRIGHT GUY, as on his breakthrough 1999 smash SMOKE RINGS IN THE DARK, Allan transcends the PR to produce a pleasing hybrid of modern, radio-friendly country and the genre's more traditional elements. | | Allan has an appealing taste for the songs of country's underground songwriters: on ALRIGHT GUY he covers two by Bruce Robison (including "What Would Willie Do?" a song that seeks life advice from Willie Nelson) and one each by Jim Lauderdale ("What's On My Mind") and Todd Snider ("Alright Guy"). He imbues his more mainstream efforts ("Man to Man," "Man of Me") with an authenticity drawn from a combination of raw talent and deep, heartfelt country roots. |

4 of 5 Alright Guy is great CD, lousy song Tuesday, November 20, 2001 Country Fan from Heartland, USA
This album overall is great and typical Gary Allan. However, the inclusion of the song "Alright Guy" is sadly disappointing. I would be surprised if Country radio would ever play a song which includes inexcusible references to such things as drugs, and alcohol, and sex organs. In fact, the tone of the song is to make someone feel good about themselves, even normal, when they are in reality a porn crazed, foul-mouthed, drug induced alcoholic. What's more, they made the song the title track! Shame on Gary Allan and shame on MCA Nashville for not providing better product oversight. Was this review helpful?
