| | | A Wolfgang Peterson Film. Features: Widescreen, English, Subtitled United States president James Marshall (Harrison Ford) makes an impassioned speech to a room full of Russian dignitaries: No longer will the greatest power on earth tolerate human violations such as those recently suffered under the fascist tyrant General Radek (Jurgen Prochnow) in Kazakhstan. He praises the joint Russian-American commando raid that resulted in the capture of this brutal dictator as the opening salvo in an all-out war against political tyranny. Later, the President joins his wife (Wendy Crewson) and daughter (Liesel Mathews) aboard his haven, his fortress, Air Force One. En route to Washington, the plane is hijacked by Radek loyalists posing as Russian journalists (Gary Oldman). They intend to force the release of their leader by holding the President hostage. The Vice President (Glenn Close) in the White House cannot reason with them and all the nation's military might is useless against them. The burden of stopping these terrorists ultimately rests on the shoulders of one man: The President himself, who has secretly remained on board the plane. What is UMDTM? Editor's Note
President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) is one of the most respected leaders in the history of America. When Kazakhstanian separatists commit atrocities on their own people, Marshall authorizes a guerrilla mission to take their leader, General Radek (Jürgen Prochnow), into custody and restore the democratic regime. In his speech afterward, the president vows never to let America hesitate again when dealing with terrorists. However, that's before a group of them, led by the ruthless Korchunov (Gary Oldman) take over his own flight on Air Force One, with his wife and young daughter also on board. President Marshall, a decorated Vietnam veteran, becomes a one-man vigilante force in his efforts to free his family and the other hostages, retake the plane, and thwart the hijackers. Director Wolfgang Petersen's thrilling film is supported by an excellent ensemble cast, which includes William H. Macy, Philip Baker Hall, and Glenn Close as Kathryn Bennett, the vice president who must hold the Cabinet together in Marshall's absence.
 Plot Summary

As the president fights to subdue the hijackers and ground the plane, his Cabinet fights to keep the nation together.

| | Professional Reviews | Box Office "...Superb acting from Harrison Ford..." 09/01/1997 p.119USA Today "...Viscerally juicy....The movie is effectively cast..." -- 3 out of 4 stars 07/25/1997 p.2D Entertainment Weekly "...[A] slyly witty and inspiring spectacle of the chief executive as action renegade..." 07/25/1997 p.48-9 New York Times "...[Close] acts with appealing brusqueness and precision....This is a meat-and-potatoes American thriller that means business..." 07/25/1997 p.C1 Los Angeles Times "...AIR FORCE ONE is at once vigorous and old-fashioned, a piece of expertly crafted entertainment that gets the job done with skill and panache..." 07/25/1997 p.F1 Premiere 3 stars out of 4 -- "An absolute blast with a fast-moving story, great villain...[and] Ford at the top of his game..." 06/15/2009 DVD Verdict 8 of 10 A typical Hollywood big-budget action blockbuster, it still delivers quite a punch with reference quality picture and sound...This is the sort of movie that just begs to be seen in the theatres. Yes, it's a formula movie, but it does its job so well and the payoff is so great that you don't care! However, for those of you who missed it in the theatres, you will be treated to a very high-quality presentation on DVD...On a personal note, I'm tickled that so much of the movie was filmed in various locations in Ohio (Mansfield, Columbus, and Cleveland), a fact that does lead to some mirth on the commentary track...A good time was had by all with this disc, which would be a fine addition to a DVD library. Stunning video and audio and a heroic Harrison Ford should excuse the flaws and minimal extras. - Nicholas Sylvain Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10 Harrison Ford is one of the most likable and convincing of movie stars, and he almost pulls off the impossible in "Air Force One.'' I don't mean he saves the day; I mean he almost saves the movie. Here is a good example of how star power can breathe new life into old cliches--and "Air Force One'' is rich with cliches...The movie is well-served by the quality of the performances. Close is convincing as the vice president, and Gary Oldman has a couple of effective scenes as the terrorist (``Murder? You took 100,000 lives to save a nickel on the price of a gallon of gas.''). And Harrison Ford is steady and commanding as the president, even while we're asking ourselves if a middle-age chief executive would really be better at hand-to-hand combat than his Secret Service agents..."Air Force One'' is a fairly competent recycling of familiar ingredients, given an additional interest because of Harrison Ford's personal appeal. - Roger Ebert
