For its sophomore bow, AFTER WE GO, the Kentucky quartet continues down the path of its own nu-metal legacy. Alice in Chains/Korn producer Toby Wright returns behind the boards, and, not surprisingly, aspects of Tantric's sound mirror the defunct AIC. The phrasing and timbre of Ferreira sounds eerily like the late Layne Staley and guitarist Todd Whitener strikes the same kind of strumming/riffing style that Jerry Cantrell had mastered a decade prior. The result is a batch of songs with built-in grooves and a hypnotic aura that manages to rock in all the right places, whether it's the anthemic mea culpa "Hero," the sinewy-yet-catchy rage-fest "Hey Now," or the chugging quest for self "Chasing After." There's even a nod to classic-rock fans by way of the Fleetwood Mac cover "The Chain." With AFTER WE GO, Tantric not only ends up surpassing their DOTN origins, but the group finds a place at the head of the post-grunge table. |
