Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Late 2005 saw the release of numerous albums that benefited those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Of these compilations, HIP HOP HELPS: AFTER THE STORM is one of the most fitting, since many of the rappers featured on the record hail from the Gulf Coast area. The album includes tracks by Turk, Lil' Flip, and Haystak, as well as an intriguing duet featuring blues rockers the North Mississippi All Stars and rapper Al Kapone. All proceeds go to the American Red Cross, making AFTER THE STORM both a contribution to a worthy cause and an excellent Southern hip-hop mix.
After Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi Gulf region in August 2005, millions of people reached out to help the victims however they could. Johnny Phillips, vice president of Memphis-based Select-O-Hits, decided to do his part by putting together a hip-hop album whose proceeds all went directly to the Red Cross. Every artist and label contacted cooperated with Phillips, which means that there's a pretty good lineup on Hip Hop Helps: After the Storm. Two of the cuts (Jim-E-Mac's "One Week Later" and Khujo Goodie's "Hard to Forget") were written specifically about the hurricane and show the rappers' feelings of hopelessness as they watch the destruction on television, and there is also some attempt to include the more socially conscious songs from the other artists' most recent albums. Pastor Troy pays tribute to a fallen friend on "Crossroads" and Paul Wall hooks up with Shei Atkins on the stick-up-for-yourself "Quit Bumpin'," although the money/weapons/women themes of Yo Gotti's "Believe That" and Latino Jam Cartel's "Slammed to the Floor" almost completely erase any effort to promote personal responsibility and social awareness. The Southern rappers' love of heavy beats (and everyone on the album is Southern, hailing from Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, Mississippi, and of course, Louisiana) means that there are a lot of strong bass rhythms that flow nicely with the singsongy delivery many of the rappers employ (Eightball & MJG and Haystak are perfect examples of this, their lines echoing the cadence of the Southern drawl), which can mask the occasional subpar rhyme. But there's some really touching stuff here, like "Commentary from Mousa," in which the New Orleans native speaks about his own experience living through Katrina, and there's some fun stuff as well, all of which makes Hip Hop Helps: After the Storm a relevant and interesting album. ~ Marisa Brown
