The legendary Man of Steel, last survivor of the doomed planet Krypton lives on earth, assuming the secret identity of Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for the Metropolis Daily Planet. But with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, he battles for truth and justice as Superman. This is the first Superman TV series! Originally aired in the 1950's, it featured George Reeves as Superman and enjoyed tremendous success during its broadcast. Editor's Note

Containing one of the most instantly recognizable intro sequences to a TV show ("Look up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!"), THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN was the first attempt to bring the comic book character to television screens. This first season originally aired in 1952, and established great cinematic characters such as Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and of course Clark Kent himself. By day Kent attempts to live an anonymous existence as a reporter for the Daily Planet, but when trouble comes calling, he transforms into Superman, the last survivor from the planet Krypton.

George Reeves convincingly played Superman throughout the first season of the show, and he returned to play the Man of Steel in all of the subsequent Seasons. Although it soon turned into a laugh-fest, this first series of adventures takes a serious approach to the characters, mirroring later interpretations such as LOIS & CLARK from the 1990s. Hugely popular in its day, this complete collection of episodes from the first season of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN affords viewers the chance to wallow in some awesome retro TV action.

Professional Reviews
New York Times
"Reeves's Superman...is a complex, conflicted figure, at least as conflicted about his superstatus as any of the explicitly neurotic Marvel superheroes who came along in the 1960's..." 10/25/2005 p.E4

5 of 5 Adventures of Superman – Season 1 Tuesday, September 19, 2006
Dan Shay from Fresno, CA

The transfer to DVD is excellent. Phyllis Coates did a great job as Lois Lane. The Dolby Digital is good but would have been much better if they had used the two front channels instead of just the front center channel. The supplemental material is good, but there should have been more of it. As a car guy, it was great to see those old Nashes that you just don't see around anymore! It was funny seeing Clark Kent driving the Chrysler convertible and then in another episode it was being driven by criminals. Too much car swapping was going on. Perry White's Buick was a little too old-fashioned for the show, but then again it got driven off a cliff and destroyed. Now that old Nash convertible, did it belong to Clark Kent or Lois Lane? They both seemed to drive it about 50/50. The cave location was overused as with other locations. It seems like Kellogg's, the show owner, could have come up with more money for the background stuff! The filming of the series was done well overall.
