This enclosure is great! It was easy to assemble-install a hard drive-and works great with either the USB or Firewire cable. The only Con to me would be the regular price. I bought one when it was on sale and it also had a rebate on it. Was this review helpful?

I've been comparing enclosures for months. Most are made like crap or simply won't work with certain drives or the cables are too short or blah blah blah. It would be helpful if stores like buy.com would filter out these products but this is the purpose of reviews I guess.
This ACS-200 USB 2.0 / Firewire works seamlessly with XP AND OSX. I installed a WesternDigital 300gig drive (with only one size screwdriver- shocking, I know) in seconds. A tiny monkey could do it. The case (all sides) is aluminum and lightweight and sturdy has a small external power supply. No gawdy lights or colors like it's a damn spaceship- just brushed aluminum with a single blue LED centered on the face. Matches beautifully with the powerbook or macbookpro series of notebooks.
It is practically silent with the WesternDigital drive. I'm sure sound depends on the type of drive you go with.
No drivers needed for XP or OSX obviously.
The contruction is clean, simple, beautiful and sturdy. Installation couldn't be easier. Finally. Someone got it right. Hats off to Adaptec and their engineers!

The Adaptec USB/FireWire enclosure is sleek and very compact, not gaudy like some other enclosures. Performance is excellent, with FireWire transfer rates around 25 MB/s. USB 2.0 is considerably slower at around 9.5 MB/s, but that's more to do with the limitations of USB rather than the enclosure. (External drives and enclosures ALWAYS report the interface speed, which is pretty much useless. I.e. 400 Mb/s for FireWire and 480 Mb/s for USB 2.0.) When compared to actual performance of external FireWire drives reported in magazine and on-line reviews, this enclosure matches the top of the pack. The very tight space and short ATA cable on the inside of the enclosure made installing the drive a little cumbersome, but with care it's not very difficult. (I wish the ATA connector for the enclosure wasn't so close to the back of the drive.) I would definitely purchase another one of these enclosures. Was this review helpful?

I've tried several different brands of enclosures and this is the only brand that has never given me any problems. The computer quickly recognizes the device when plugged in/turned on and data transfer is fast. This is the only brand enclosure I buy now. Was this review helpful?
