| | | | "I wish someone would tell me exactly what a journal is. When I asked my mother, she said, "Well, it's like a diary, only different." That helps. She was going to explain more, but Mrs. Furtz (the lady who just moved in across the street) called to say that my brother Dennis was throwing eggs at her house, and my mother went berserk so she didn't finish telling me. How am I supposed to write a journal if I don't even know what one is?.." (from the first line) Mary Lou Finney grudgingly begins writing a journal as a summer project for school. Then her cousin Carl Ray comes to stay, and what started out as a dull assignment quickly becomes an amazing record of first love and family intrigue. Mary Lou's hilarious observations on love, death, and the confusing mechanics of holding hands will delight fans of "Walk Two Moons." Annotation: The story of Mary Lou Finney's 13th summer is told via the journal entries she is forced to write for an English assignment. As the summer progresses, Mary Lou must deal with a visit from her seemingly cloddish older cousin, Carl Ray, the death of a neighbor, changes in her friendship with her newly boy crazy pal, Beth Ann, and the possibility of her own romance with her classmate, Alex.
| PraiseKirkus "Tightly written, nary a word out of place, by turns sarcastic, tender, and irreverent, this is a real piece of comedy about contemporary teen life from one funny writer." 09/01/1995Voya "The story has everything a young adult wants in a book, suspense, humor, romance, and relationships with family and friends." June 1996 |
