| Album Notes and Credits |
Notes & Personnel Info | | This 2002 release from Vitamin unites two previous Nine Inch Nails tribute albums that exist separately in the label's catalog -- 1999's Radiant Decay and Broken Machine from 2001. The reasoning behind this is unclear. Many of the same artists appear on both discs, and the two-volume, 23-song format merely exacerbates the overall mundanity of the material. Also, given that most of the artists appearing here are old Vitamin Records stable hands -- contributing to many of the label's varied tributes -- Broken Machine's claim to "bring together some of the most talented musicians of our time" in the liner notes is a bit much. Each volume includes reworkings of NIN songs emphasizing industrial, metal, electronica, goth, or all four genres at once. However, it's rare that any of the relative unknowns here get the formula right. Cleopatra's Covered in Nails series is the superior Nine Inch Nails tribute, including as it does big-league industrial types like Die Krupps and Rosetta Stone. ~ Johnny Loftus |
