In this book, bestsellling author Bill Bryson confronts his greatest challenge: to understand--and, if possible, answer--the oldest, biggest questions posed about the universe, everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization. High school & older.

Annotation:
A SHORT HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING showcases science's crowning achievements and presents them in readable fashion. With topics ranging from continental drift to the nature of time, Bryson, author of I'M A STRANGER HERE MYSELF, offers up clearly argued explanations able to reach even the least scientifically inclined.

Praise
Kirkus
"Loads of good explaining, with reminders, time and again, of how much remains unknown, neatly putting the death of science into perspective." 04/01/2003

Author Bio
Bill Bryson
Born in Des Moines in 1951, Bill Bryson left for England in 1973 between semesters at Drake University. What began as a summer abroad became a 20-year sojourn: he got married and started a family, and began a career in journalism, taking writing posts at the Times and the Independent. He also laid the foundations for what would become a highly successful travel-writing career. Returning to the United States in 1989, Bryson chronicled an inspired visitation of the family vacations of his youth, which resulted in THE LOST CONTINENT. At first wary of Bryson's often self-deprecating and wry humor, critics have since been won over by his consistency, energy, and humor. He has produced a number of travelogues, all with his hallmark wit and attention to detail. In addition to his writings on travel, Bryson has also written and contributed to texts on language. Often ranked with Theroux and company--and sporting his own fan club--Bryson lives in Hanover, New Hampshire, with his family.

1 HOW TO BUILD A UNIVERSE

NO MATTER HOW hard you try you will never be able to grasp just how tiny, how spatially unassuming, is a proton. It is just way too small.

A proton is an infinitesimal part of an atom, which is itself of course an insubstantial thing. Protons are so small that a little dib of ink like the dot on this i can hold something in the region of 500,000,000,000 of them, rather more than the number of seconds contained in half a million years. So protons are exceedingly microscopic, to say the very least.

Now imagine if you can (and of course you can't) shrinking one of those protons down to a billionth of its normal size into a space so small that it would make a proton look enormous. Now pack into that tiny, tiny space about an ounce of matter. Excellent. You are ready to start a universe.

I'm assuming of course that you wish to build an inflationary universe. If you'd prefer instead to build a more old-fashi

5 of 5 Wow! Thursday, April 17, 2008

Lovable sarcasm and numbers fill the pages of the book, A Short History of Nearly Everything written by Bill Bryson. Born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1951, Bryson was in the middle of an expedition in England when he met his wife. Bryson wrote his first book, The Lost Continent which became a hit for its sense of humor and truthfulness, about his trips around small town America. Bryson took a number of years writing for two English newspapers, The Times and The Independent. A Short History of Nearly Everything was published in the spring of 2003 in the US. Bryson reached his objective of informing and entertaining the reader with information that is factual and mind blowing because he is so enthusiastic and so knowledgeable that it’s quite hard to get lost! Bryson provides just enough information so that you almost never feel overwhelmed. A Short History of Nearly Everything is constantly bringing you amusing information and never leaves you uninterested. Although, the 500+ pages may leave one weary with their brain full to bursting, many believe this summary of time is not enough to tell the tale of the universe. In addition, many readers love how this book provides a short and sweet grasp of all the basic facts of the general sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, botany, climatology, geology, and many more. In short, I would call this book “A Short History of Everything You Would Want to Know” and I give it four stars out of five. Pick this one up because I guarantee that one will want to astonish one’s mind more than once in their life.

5 of 5 Mad Fun Science Monday, October 16, 2006
A Reader from Short Hills, NJ
This is a content-rich book of Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Oceanography, Anthropology, and more. And it is written in a very enjoyable and understandable way. The facts and figures included are pretty amazing and must have required a huge amount of research. If you like science but struggle to find a book that doesn't make your mind spin (or fall asleep), this is for you.
