"Once on a dark winter's day, when the yellow fog hung so thick and heavy in the streets of London that the lamps were lighted and the shop windows blazed as they do at night, an odd-looking little girl sat in a cab with her father and was driven rather slowly through the big thoroughfares..." (from the first line)

This beloved classic tells the story of little Sarah Crewe, sent to a proper English girls school by her rich, soldier father. When their wealth is gone, Sarah is forced to become a scullery maid at the school, but she bravely maintains her dignity and overcomes her adversity. Includes a reader's group guide.

Annotation:
A LITTLE PRINCESS is the timeless classic about Sara Crewe, daughter of a wealthy father, who is brought from India to a boarding school in England. There, due to her father's wealth, she is treated like royalty--until her father suddenly dies, and she is left penniless. She is soon treated like a scullery maid, and forced to live in a cold garret. Keeping her courage and never bitter, Sara is rescued and reinstated in riches by a long-lost friend of her father's. With wonderful illustrations by Tasha Tudor.

Author Bio
Frances Hodgson Burnett
Frances Hodgson Burnett and her family moved from their native England to the United States after the death of Frances's father. The family settled in Tennessee; she was 16. Although she is best known for her writing for children, she was first an established novelist and playwright for adults; it was only after the birth of her two sons that she began creating works for children. Her book THE SECRET GARDEN is one of the most popular children's books of all time.
