Editor's Note

A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is the story of David (Haley Joel Osment), the first mecha (a futuristic term for a mechanized human being) designed with the ability to love. A couple whose son is in a coma "adopts" David to help them recover from their loss. Naturally, things do not go as planned, and David is forced to leave the mother (Frances O'Connor) he's been "imprinted" to love, and make his way in the world. Traveling with Teddy, a hi-tech stuffed bear, David escapes the Flesh Fair, where angry humans destroy mechas to "purge artificiality," and unexpectedly befriends Gigolo Joe (Jude Law in a wry performance), a robot designed to pleasure women. Joe agrees to help David in his quest to become human.

Director Stanley Kubrick originally developed A.I., at one point asking Spielberg to direct it. When Kubrick passed away, Spielberg took the reins. Using a treatment and thousands of drawings commissioned by Kubrick, Spielberg wrote his own screenplay (his first since 1979's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND). Osment, perhaps the only pre-teen actor who can effectively convey existential angst, gives a marvelous performance, helping Spielberg create a gorgeous futuristic fairy tale that questions the very nature of what we call life.

Steven Spielberg's A.I. is extraordinary! - Lisa Schwarzbaum

Time Magazine 9 of 10
The film is bold, rigorous and sentimental by turns, and often all at once... Even when A.I. meanders or stumbles, it is fascinating as a wedding of two disparate auteurs... - Jess Cagle

Salon.com 8 of 10
...[Osment] shows a complexity and subtlety here that would be astonishing in a far more experience actor. Osment isn't just a cute kid, he's an actor projecting an idealized and artifical image of what a cute child is suppossed to be...

2 of 5 Great Idea, Bad Movie Tuesday, April 02, 2002
Aaronlancaster from Austin, Tx

I don't have the DVD but am writing this from seeing the movie in the theater. I love Spielberg but was thoroughly disappointed by this movie. My major complaint is that it is too long. I am not talking about Braveheart or Lord of the Rings too long, I am talking about the fact that the movie didn't look as though Spielberg wanted to edit anything out because it was Kubrick's originally. The acting was so so with Jude Law doing a fine job even though his character was boring. The problem with the plot is that it didn't ever settle on a specific topic. It isn't a comedy, it isn't a love story, it tries to be dramatic but it isn't a drama. In the end the movie would have benefited from large amounts of editing and a little bit better of a story.

3 of 5 Editing would make good movie great. Saturday, March 16, 2002
majordickason from Capitola, CA
Tom Hanks described Speilberg's efficient shooting and mental organization on set of S.P.R. Seems he had so much extra footage a third removed from A.I. would have made a better film. Acting and story are there along with footage that takes you where you don't want to go and don't need to go in route to a powerful yet weakened ending. Example -why do we need a Mad Max circus where cyborgs more human than the humans are graphically tortured with acid baths, crushed and pulled apart in front the cutest little girl and Osment? It doesn't evoke the sympathy or compassion that the story inevitably wants us to experience repeatedly. Several alternative places to end the film remain which might work in a final cut but the actual ending feels late when it finally arrives. It is still worth owning for the greatness achieved. Osment is such a good actor.

5 of 5 AWESOME Tuesday, March 12, 2002
Stuart from Iola, WI
There are only a handful of Sci fi movies that are truely classics, and can be watched over and over again. This movie is right up there as one of the best I've seen. A sleeper classic so to speak. Compares with greats like...Bladerunner, Dune,Star Wars, ET, ect. I would suggest this as an addition to anyones collection. If you love Sci Fi you will love this movie!

3 of 5 Bad movie Saturday, March 09, 2002
Joe from Houston, TX
Haley Joe Osment is a great young actor, but there is a reason that Kubrick never actually made this movie. The story starts out interesting but then turns into a long and painful Pinocchio metaphor.

5 of 5 I outright balled for 20 minutes.... Wednesday, March 06, 2002
Jon Athey from Midland, MI
I have never been moved during a movie as much as I was moved during A.I. The character of David played by Haley Joel Osment completely sucks you in and you become engulfed in his quest to become more than his creators intended. The movie has suspense, action and drama. But make sure you have a brand new box of tissues for this one.

5 of 5 Soon to be a classic Tuesday, March 05, 2002
Dan Bazley from Columbus, Indiana
Before I bought A.I. I read some reviews and for the most part people either loved the movie or hated it, with the latter being in the minority. After I watched it, I have to say it's one of the finest movies Steven Spielberg ever produced. Aside from the spectacular special effects, the story was fantastic.
