TV funnyman Stephen Colbert isn’t going to be alone this Holiday Season, but rather, will be visited by a host of A-list musical comrades including Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, John Legend & Toby Keith! DVD bonus features include alternate endings, a video Advent calendar and a twisted Yule log. Portions of the DVD proceeds will support the Feeding America charity.

"I never would have guessed it when Colbert spun off from The Daily Show in 2005, but his show is now officially the funnier of the two."  Erich Asperschlager, DVD Verdict
"For delightful comic effect, Christmas exaggerates the airless awkwardness and brazen artificiality of holiday specials."  Nathan Rabin, The Onion A.V. Club

Editor's Note

What better way to celebrate Christmas than with the fake media's biggest Scrooge, Stephen Colbert? Dirty liberals like Elvis Costello, Feist, and Willie Nelson--along with real American Toby Keith--are on the guest list for this special that includes all the ego-fueled mayhem of THE COLBERT REPORT, as well as a smattering of irony-laced Yuletide songs, such as "There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In" and "Little Dealer Boy."

It may not end up revered like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" or even that awesome televised yule log, but "A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All" puts a lot of tongue into a big ol' cheek for 45 minutes and provides more than a few laughs spoofing Christmas specials...Of course, you have to wonder why Stephen Colbert even wanted to do a Christmas special, other than the fact that he likes musical theater, can carry a tune, has great taste in musical friends and, perhaps most important of all, Comedy Central said he could...And so "A Colbert Christmas" allows Colbert to both stay in character (he plays a faux archconservative talk show host on his "Colbert Report") while also having a little fun with his friends...If you're looking for something slick, look elsewhere. "A Colbert Christmas" looks as if it was put together in about an hour for just under a hundred dollars, but that's part of the reason it's so funny. The premise is simple: Colbert wants his own Christmas special and, more important, presents from Santa. But unless he can get to New York for the filming, all will be lost...And of course he can't leave his cabin in upstate New York because there's a bear outside...Clad in a red turtleneck, white Irish cable-knit cardigan and jeans, he prances around the cabin in various states of dismay, blind joy and hopefulness (that he'll get presents). Colbert has a running gag where his pal singer-songwriter Elvis Costello is helping him put on a show...There are mistletoe jokes. There is zaniness. A final piano duet between Colbert and Costello, called "There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In," appears to sum up the point of the special, which is to say it should be fine to have a Christmas special. - Tim Goodman
