"The graphic autobiographical account of a man who suffered horrible abuse, including isolation and violence, as a child and who eventually achieved a successful life in society..."

This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother''s games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it."

Dave''s bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.

Annotation:
In this moving memoir, Dave Pelzer recalls his childhood, when he was abused by an alcoholic mother. He recounts the strategies he used to survive the "games" she devised that reduced him from a human being to an "it." Dave somehow survives, frees himself of his mother's tyranny, and eventually finds success in the Air Force.

Author Bio
Dave Pelzer
As his autobiographical trilogy attests, Dave Pelzer was brutally abused by an emotionally unstable and alcoholic mother until the state of California intervened. He then spent six years in foster care, after which he entered the Air Force. Pelzer has earned numerous awards for his volunteer and military service, among them the 1993 Ten Outstanding Americans Award. He now lectures on the personal growth circuit.

While Father Is Away

After the knife incident, Father spent less and less time at home and more at work. He made excuses to the family, but I didn''t believe him. I often shivered with fear as I sat in the garage, hoping for some reason he might not leave. In spite of all that had happened, I still felt Father was my protector. When he was home, Mother only did about half the things to me that she did when he was gone.

When Father was home, it became his habit to help me with the evening dishes. Father washed and I dried. While we worked, we talked softly so neither Mother nor the other boys could hear us. Sometimes, several minutes would pass without us talking. We wanted to make sure the coast was clear.

Father always broke the ice. "How ya doing, Tiger?" he would say.Hearing the old name that Father used when I was a little boy always brought a smile to my face. "I''m OK," I would answer. "Did you ha

5 of 5 Definately an eye opener Tuesday, February 07, 2006
Jeannette from Bronx, NY

I read this book at the age of 21. At this age I hated reading, I am now 29 and my daughter hates reading. This book opened up my eyes in a way that no other book had. It made me become interested in reading. I'm now giving this book to my 12 yr. old daughter in hopes that it will grab her with the same effect it did me. It is definately sad what Dave had to indure at such a young age, but abuse at any level is sad. I would recommend this book to anyone old or young.

This is, by far, the greatest book I have read this year. You can literally feel the pain this boy is going through - and celebrate when he triumphs. A real tear jerker.

5 of 5 WOW! Saturday, August 10, 2002
Val from Harrogate, TN
I am from Tennessee and have traveled to Nottingham, England with my husband to be with his family for Christmas. The trip was very long there so I decided to get a few books to read on the way back home.... I seen this book and wasn't sure if it was a book I would want to read. As soon as we got to the airport our flight had a delay...let me just say I got the book out started to read and never put it down! I just cannot believe adults can do something so cruel to their own children. Thank you for making me aware! Val

5 of 5 Eye-Opening Thursday, June 10, 1999
A Reader from Clarkfield, MN
This is one of the most bizarre books I have ever read. It is unbelievable that a mother could hate her own child so much. It is astounding that David was able to survive such a nightmare and has had the courage to write about it. An EXCELLENT BOOK!!

Being an abused child myself, the feelings in this book are very familiar. I really encourage everyone to read this book. It will open your eyes and maybe suddenly you will find something you can do to help stop and/or prevent the abusers and heal the abused. Have some tissues ready from the first page, it is a tearjerker.
