| | | | "It was a fine summer day, and after breakfast Frances said, "I am going to play with Thelma.".." (from the first line) Frances and Thelma are friends--most of the time Thelma always seems to get Frances into trouble. When she tricks Frances into buying her tea set, it''s the last straw. Can Frances show her that it''s better to lose a bargain than lose a friend? Annotation: When Frances's friend Thelma plays a mean trick on her, Frances thinks of a way to outsmart her. Afterwards, both girls decide to have a more honest friendship. Colored pencil illustrations accompany the text.
| Author BioEncouraged to draw and paint as a child, Russell Hoban eventually went on to write and illustrate children's books, many with his first wife, Lillian. However, he also enjoyed writing, and has written several novels for adults. "Riddley Walker" is the most acclaimed of these novels, winning the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Nebula Award, and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, as well as the Australian Science Fiction Achievement Award.
