My Replay TV (HDR) was getting old and harder to get the TV listings via the telephone modem so thought it time to upgrade. I had already set up a Microsoft (MS) Windows Media Center in the basement theater for all to record and watch their favorite shows. Had no idea the MS Media Center had the extended capability. I had and was originally a Sony Playstation (PS) fan and became fond of the TVersity (http://www.tversity.com/home) program to serve out media through a computer to my PS3. See the following how to (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/streaming). My PS3 was a favorite in the family because it did so well at serving out numerous movies at a flick of the switch. Got really tired of the scratched and missing DVDs that floated throughout the house. See the following on backing up your DVDs (http://www.dvdfab.com/index.htm) and the tutorial. Never the less I have now become a huge fan of XBOX 360 but not for gaming for media extending. Through my searching I found out about Media Extending (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/mediacenter/features/extender.mspx) and realized this is what I needed for the master bedroom. Now I could use the MS Media Center PC to connect to the XBOX 360 and serve out entertainment through my home network. Lessons learned... 1. If your using the XBOX 360 for media extending you only need the XBOX 360 Arcade model. If you plan on downloading content from the MS market place then you might want to upgrade to the other models as there will be more storage place for content. I purchased the Arcade model because I am already serving out media via MS Media Center and TVersity. 2. Wireless networks are not for media extending or media servers. Do not think for one second it might work for you especially if you have less then wireless N. Even with wireless N your pushing it. 3. Go wired if you can and make every effort before resorting to the wireless network. If you have existing switches and/or hubs think about upgrading to gigabyte switches. My network is piece milled with hubs and switches that are 10/100 and might be 8 years old. Should be buying the gigabyte switches today. 4. Must use the HDMI cable with the XBOX 360 to the flat panel TV. HDMI cable provides a sharper picture and found while using the XBOX 360 remote control responds better (faster) for unknown reasons. 5. Defrag is your friend. Set up auto or scheduled defrag every day if not once a week. This should be done on your MS Media Center PC and TVersity if they are not one and the same. Recommend different PCs if you can. High seek rates to the hard drive create slow performance and the more its fragmented the longer it take to serve out the data. Speed it up by defragging regularly. This info would have helped me so I thought Id post it for others. Good luck. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great product Monday, February 25, 2008 Mateo from Springfield
This is a great product for someone who doesn't need a lot of memory. So far the 256 mb has been plenty space for saved games for madden and assassin's creed...
I hooked it up to my 19 inch lcd via vga/hd cable and it looks great. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Awesome - yet loud. Tuesday, February 05, 2008 Will from Boston, MA
Just as the headline says. It plays everything I throw at it, has amazing graphics even on my old 35 inch tube TV. Only downer is that once you put a game in and load it, its VERY LOUD. Other than that, I'd recommend this product to anyone - especially since you can upgrade it fully. Was this review helpful?

first of all do u want to have to go out and keep buying memory cards to store all your game data i sure don't and second of all the others have hard drives built in and are on 80 dollars more which i would just keep on saving up and but the real deal soo if u want the basics and the cheapest i'm not stopping you but you should just remember that it wont be as good an experience as the premium console Was this review helpful? |
