Experience the awesome power of the X-Men's epic, final battle. Join well-known mutant heroes and villains, and meet a cadre of all-new warriors -- including Angel, Beast, Juggernaut and Colossus -- in this thrilling, explosive adventure!

After a controversial "cure" is discovered, mutants can choose to retain their superhuman abilities or give up their unique gifts and become "normal." When peaceful mutant leader Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) clashes with his militant counterpart, Magneto (Ian McKellen), the battle lines are drawn for the war to end all wars.

Bursting with nonstop action, spectacular special effects and exclusive extras, X-Men: The Last Stand is a force of nature that "will blow you away!" (NY1)

"...terrifically entertaining."  Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
"Great action...The greatest X-Men movie yet..."  Maxim
"...packs more action and razzle-dazzle visuals into its 104-minute running time than "Mission: Impossible III," "Poseidon" and "The Da Vinci Code" combined."  William Arnold, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Editor's Note

As the third installment of the X-Men series opens, the world has entered a relatively peaceful period for mutants. There's a mutant-tolerant president of the United States, a blue furry mutant named Beast (Kelsey Grammer) heading up the Department of Mutant Affairs, and Magneto's shape-shifting femme fatale, Mystique, has been captured. The tranquility is shattered by two events. Worthington Laboratories, using a powerful mutant boy, develops a serum that eliminates the "mutant X gene" permanently. This so-called "cure" quickly divides the mutant community; Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his school are willing to give the government the benefit of the doubt, but Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his mutant Brotherhood see the serum as a vile threat to their way of life. They form an army of mutants and march on the fortified Worthington Laboratory located on Alcatraz Island. A much more dire threat appears in the form of the resurrected super-mutant Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), who has succumbed to her cataclysmic Id identity known as The Phoenix. To face these menaces Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Storm (Halle Berry) and the younger members of the X-Men must leap into action, but they must do so without the guidance of Professor Xavier--in a showdown with the powers of The Phoenix, his mind-control powers proved insufficient.

To his credit, new X-Men director Brett Ratner emulates the style and tone struck by Bryan Singer (director of the two previous films) by combining outrageous special effects and hyperkinetic action sequences with earnest soul-searching and mutant "issues" that are clearly meant to parallel the political hot-button topics of tolerance, prejudice, power, and responsibility.

X-Men: The Last Stand - DVD Review
By: Sean O'Connell - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews
Published on: 4/10/2009 5:36 PM
Last Stand has as many characters as a deck has cards. The thrill of seeing Vinnie Jones in the Juggernaut suit or Kelsey Grammer as the blue-haired Beast is squashed once you ultimately realize they contribute nothing to the story. Co-screenwriters Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn can’t address each character in detail – the movie would run an additional three hours. As a result, some are killed off quickly, others are forgotten for long stretches, and all, save for Wolverine and Storm, have their potential wasted....read the full review

ReelViews 8 of 10
For X-Men viewers, this is probably as straightforward as it gets: if you liked the first two, you're likely to appreciate the third. X-Men: The Last Stand isn't as taut or satisfying as X-Men 2, but it's better constructed and better paced than the original X-Men. The differences in quality between the three are minor, however; and, despite the change in directors (Brett Ratner replacing Bryan Singer, who bolted to helm Superman Returns), there seems to be a single vision. X-Men: The Last Stand is the first blockbuster of the 2006 summer season that hasn't caused me to shake my head with disappointment. It delivers pretty much what's expected. - James Berardinelli

Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10
One of the distractions in all the "X-Men" movies is that the X-Men are always getting involved in local incidents that have little to do with the big picture. They demonstrate their powers during disagreements and courtships, neighborhood emergencies, psychological problems or while showing off...All the same, I enjoyed "X-Men: The Last Stand." I liked the action, I liked the absurdity, I liked the incongruous use and misuse of mutant powers, and I especially liked the way it introduces all of those political issues and lets them fight it out with the special effects. Magneto would say this is a test of survival of the fittest. Xavier would hope they could learn to live together. - Roger Ebert

5 of 5 X-men United Review Thursday, January 25, 2007
A Viewer from Houston, Texas

I've always enjoyed the X-men, and was excited when they continued the movie franchise with the third installment. I can't wait for the Wolverine solo!

1 of 5 What are you thinking? Wednesday, November 01, 2006
Markus from Batavia, IL
I absolutely love the X-men. I've followed them all my life. I've watched all the different X-men cartoons on TV. I LOVED the X-Men and X-Men 2 movies. That's why I hate to say I can't agree with these other reviews. I am horribly dissapointed with this movie. This story completely ignored the cartoon plot or anything I know about Phoenix. They killed 3 of the superheroes, all of whom died for what I thought was no good reason. The movie felt like I was watching close friends get murdered. I'm going to watch Xmen I and II and pretend like Xmen 3 was never made.

What a shame. New characters make the premis interesting, but the plot sucked. The first two were much better films. I would call this one a special rental. Dont pay full price.

4 of 5 Best of the X-Men Series...... Wednesday, October 25, 2006
A Viewer from Chicagoland Area
Basically a good, entertaining movie. There were some creative changes made in reference to the characters... but that is expected. Overall I would recommend for rent and if you are X-men fan, one for the library. Be sure to watch to the end of credits.....

4 of 5 Last of the X's Monday, October 23, 2006
A Viewer from Lakewood, OH
The final installment of the X-Men franchise is almost as good as the previous two were--which is not bad, considering that those initial flicks set the bar rather high. The quality of the photography, sound, special effects, etc. remains outstanding. The movie itself "begins with a bang"; and--generally speaking--the tension seldom lags. The usual suspects turn in performances that are never less than acceptable...and often much more--including those by Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart. If one considers that these folk are, after all, comic book-based, then the viewer doesn't expect character protraits that are subtle and nuanced but at least entertaining and involving on a pop culture level. Overall the finale of the X-Men series is worth the time.

5 of 5 Great Movie Friday, October 20, 2006
A Viewer from Tucson, AZ.
I Have X-Men 1 & 2 and I feel that the X-Men 3 is very good and I like it very much. I saw it at the theater and ordered it as soon as possible, from Buy.com. If other X-Men come out I will be getting them also.

4 of 5 Great Movie - Alternate Endings Disappoint Friday, October 20, 2006
LR from Kearny, NJ
Great movie. Deceptive alternate six endings in that the DVD lets you chose in viewing the menu from the X-men or Brotherhood perspective. Yes, in actuality there are 6 alternate endings between the two menu options, however the same 3 movie endings in one menu option are the same for the other so in actuality there are only 3 original alternate endings that can only be viewed separately from the movie and not as part of it...this was disappointing therefore the 4 rating.
