As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation.

Reduced power consumption
WD has reduced power consumption by up to 40 percent compared to standard desktop drives with the combination of WD's IntelliSeek, IntelliPark, and IntelliPower technologies.

Helps enable eco-friendly PCs
WD Caviar Green drives yield an average drive power savings of 4-5 watts over standard desktop drives making it possible for our energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation. This power savings equates to reducing CO2 emission by up to 13.8 kilograms per drive per year - the equivalent of taking a car off the road for 3 days each year. By using environmentally-conscious PCs with our WD Caviar Green drives on board, large organizations with many desktop computers can minimize their carbon footprint and save real money on electricity costs.

Cool and Quiet
WD GreenPower Technology yields lower operating temperatures for increased reliability and low acoustics for ultra-quiet PCs and external drives.

Perfect for external drives
External drive manufacturers can eliminate the need for a fan in a high-capacity product with a WD Caviar Green drive, the coolest and quietest in its class. External drives with WD Caviar Green drives on board can save up to $14.00 per year in electricity costs. See our power savings chart for details.

IntelliPower
A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. Additionally, WD Caviar Green drives consume less current during startup allowing lower peak loads on systems as they are booted.

IntelliSeek
Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.

NoTouch ramp load technology
The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR)
Employs PMR technology to achieve even greater areal density.

Ideal For:
PCs, external storage, and other devices that require lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation.

5 of 5 A few weeks in, and things seem OK!? Sunday, April 12, 2009
dudeguy429 from Waukesha, WI

This hard drive is replacing a 3-4 year old WD hard drive that was apparently bad from the start in a Dell Dimension 5150 with RAID 1. Kept getting memory address errors, thinking it was Windows and McAfee not playing nice together. Unfortunately, after 4 years and the warranty being long gone, the hard drive finally crashed. Got 2 of these to replace the bad hard drive, thinking both hard drives had to be identical for RAID. NOT SO! Now I'm getting memory address problems again, so I'm guessing the other original hard drive will crash relatively soon - (in the next 3 years?) - probably sooner. When it does I have the second one ready. With the RAID utility (software) updated, installing the new RAID hard drive was EASY. Got these 2 hard drives at a great price, so even if they go bad in the next year or 2, they still serve their purpose and provide more space than the originals. IF they crash, it will be time to replace the computer anyway.

5 of 5 great drive at a great price Monday, April 06, 2009
A Customer from ada
I replace my old 80 gig ISDN cable drive with this new SATA drive. Make sure you have an extra SATA cable since the drive does not come with one. I used an old version of norton ghost 2003 to clone the old drive to the new drive and it worked like a charm and saved me countless hours of reinstalling all the programs. I plugged the new drive in and the BIOS recognized it as a slave without doing any pin settings. After cloning the drive I disconnected the old drive and slapped in the new drive. Sha-zam! 500 gig of storage now. The drive is very quiet and runs cooler that the other drive. And being a Western Digital I should have many years of trouble free storage.

5 of 5 Great product, Great price! Wednesday, December 24, 2008
Steve from Sunnyvale, CA
Bought a pair of these to make a (low-power) striped internal array inside a Mac Pro. Noticeably faster than the original boot drive, great for multiple VmWare machine images. Very easy to install (nothing needed but a small phillips screwdriver to attach the drives to the trays). All in all, a very inexpensive upgrade.

5 of 5 Quiet, Fast, and Reliable Sunday, December 21, 2008
Malik from Los Angeles, CA
Pros: Quiet, fast, reliable, GREEN! Cons: None! Needed a hard drive for all my data (work, pictures, videos, music, etc). My old hard drive was loud, a Seagate Barracuda which was loud, very loud. This one I don't even hear it when it's reading.

5 of 5 SATA, not eSATA Thursday, December 18, 2008
A Customer from Las Cruces, NM
A previous reviewer said this drive has an eSATA interface. I think it's a SATA interface, not an eSATA interface. eSATA is designed for external drives, and uses a different connector.

5 of 5 Great hard drive, easy install Monday, December 01, 2008
Derek from Delaware, OH
I purchased this as an add-on hard drive to my 4-year-old Dell 4700. It works so well, and is so much faster & quieter than the original HDD, I made it the primary. Great value and performance, and shipping was very fast - I had it within 3 days of the order. Install was simple, although the "OEM/Bare" description had me a little worried about what else I would need. Since it's a SATA drive, I just needed a cable and some screws to install it ($7 at MicroCenter bought both items). I thought I might also need jumpers, but they were not necessary for this or for my original SATA drive. Just plug it in, update the BIOS on startup (I'm running XP) and it was good to go after formatting . Very little technical knowledge required. Western Digital's site provided the installation directions which were a good reference. I'd buy this product again.

4 of 5 Great Deal!? Sunday, November 30, 2008
A Customer from Oakdale, NY
Excellent product, easy hardware install, software wise with Vista it was a throw back to the initialize, partition name days...might have been because it was OEM prod, with no installation disk. Also addition of the SATA cable would be nice. Price was good until I had to spend another $10 for a SATA cable.

5 of 5 Awesome hard drive! Wednesday, November 12, 2008
Bob from Cape Coral, Fl
Would give this drive an excellent recommendation. Was very easy to install, however if you plan on using it with an existing hard drive, there are no cables (or instructions) to do so. My install was simply unpluging cables, remove existing hard drive, put in new hard drive and plug in the cables! Ten minute job. You will then need your restore disc to re-install the operating system. ONLY NEGATIVE ASPECT was calling Western Digital for support. The call goes to India to a person that was not very helpful. I ended up ending call and figuring things out without their help...

5 of 5 Good hard drive, check your system for other items Monday, November 03, 2008
A Customer from Atlanta, GA
I really like this hard drive. I needed a new one because my existing hard drive was low on space. My computer had trouble seeing the new drive at first but checked online and adjustments to my older drive's jumper cable settings solved that problem. Make sure you have an esata cable because i don't think it comes with one. I needed a sata power adapter as well, but that is under $5.00. It is very fast and very quiet which is a nice change. Check the Western digital website for drivers because there is no install disk.

5 of 5 A Good Value Sunday, October 12, 2008
A Customer from Dover, DE
I got a great price for this 500 GB drive. As other reviewers have noted this is a bare drive - no cables, no software. Fortunately I already had cables. The drive utility software can be downloaded from WD's web site. One import note - this drive does not have a molex power socket like some other SATA drives I have purchased in the past. If you have an older power supply that doesn't have SATA-style power connectors you will need a molex-to-SATA adapter to power the drive.

5 of 5 Just what I expected from WD Tuesday, October 07, 2008
A Customer from Gallatin, TN
Nearly silent, fast starting. This is my first experience with a SATA drive and it has surpassed my expectations. I did forget to purchase my cable ahead of time, I knew that there would not be any cables shipped with the drive, but that was not a big deal. The installation couldn't have been easier. This was a great buy and I would definetely reccomend this drive.

5 of 5 Easy to install - nearly silent running! Wednesday, September 24, 2008
TY from Poolesville, MD
This hard drive is what you expect from Western Digital. These guys know how to put a HD together - it runs almost silent, spins up quickly, and is a breeze to install. One thing I didn't really think about - it's an eSATA interface. The good part is that there are no master/slave jumpers to futz with. The bad news is that you need to make sure you have the right cables. There are NONE in the box. No splitter for power, no eSATA data cable to connect this baby to the motherboard. Buy your cables first. Other than that, a fine product at an AMAZING price!

5 of 5 Cool Drive ! Sunday, September 21, 2008
Al from Bellevue, WA
Great Drive !! Installed automatically (I'm using Vista). Keep in mind that it doesn't include the SATA cable... look at the inside of your computer before buying a separate SATA cable, because I didn't, and the one I bought turns in a way that prevents the drive to be screwed into the chasis. Thumbs up for this drive

5 of 5 As easy as could be! Sunday, September 21, 2008
Bill Poirier from West Seneca, NY
This WD drive installed easily and was up and running in 10 minutes...it didn't come with a SATA data cable which I didn't realize but that was my fault for not noticing when I placed the order. Very quiet. I actually bought another one since my 4 year old WD lighted combo external drive just died tonight. Thank goodness I backed everything up on the new one last week...phew !!!

5 of 5 Excellent product for the price Friday, September 12, 2008
A Customer from Louisville, KY
The installation is as easy as it can be. The hard disk is very quite. After a month of use, I have not found any issue yet. I have not tried intensive writing and reading. But that is not my specialty or intent, either.

5 of 5 Go Green! Tuesday, September 09, 2008
AD from Haverrhill, MA
The Hard Drive was easy to install and to configure in the XP OS. It seems to be quiet. I have plenty of room for now. There was some problems delivering the product but that was OK because I had to wait for data and power cables.

It's Me from Wayne, NJ
Received this drive 3 weeks ago. Installation was easy as the drive was detected right away and using XP's Computer Management -> Disk Management, I was able to change drive letter to my preference. A great buy at this price. Would recommend to my friends.

5 of 5 Save money with this drive Tuesday, July 29, 2008
A Tech Guy from Gray, TN
Works great so far. I replaced a couple smaller older drives with this one which is supposed to be energy efficient. So not only am I using one drive instead of two, but one drive that saves energy compared to a standard drive. Hopefully it lasts as long as my other WD drives have. It performs just fine as well. From the specs it should be as fast as a normal drive.

5 of 5 Quiet solid drive Monday, July 14, 2008

Hard drives are a bit of a commodity these days. As with all my previous WD drives this is performing perfectly. I did notice it to be quieter than my older drives which is a nice bonus.

5 of 5 Good Performance, Great Price Thursday, June 19, 2008
A Customer from Herndon, VA
Brought it for my wife's PC - she was doing picture editing and needed large data storage. Had to buy a second SATA cable for her Dell, download the setup program off the Western Digital website, and go into the BIOS and enable the second SATA channel. But performance is great - I'm a satisfied customer.
