Western Digital 500GB My Passport Essential USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive - WDME5000TN

Unpack, plug it into a USB port, XP recognizes it, and your ready to go. Great size. Not much bigger than a wallet. It comes with software on the drive. Can't find anything about that. Saved it for futute evaluation rather than installing before reformatting from FAT32 to NTFS, which is necessary for large file storage such as backups.

This is my 2nd WD portable hard drive and I will buy the 1TB Portbale when it is out. Great product.

My passport was easy to setup and operate on my Windows XP machine. Easy to carry in pocket.

All I had to do was plug it in and go! I don't recommend formatting it, especially if you have a Mac and you live on a PC campus! I formatted it without realizing that you need the software that is pre-installed in order to use on a Windows operating system. Yeah, I know, roll your eyes at me... you live and learn, I guess.

I received my passport and it was so easy to set up. I love it and I would recommend this hd to anybody that needs one. I have had flash drives, but I love to use this one hd over the flash drives. I have back up all my files and it was so easy to do it, just plug it in and go for it. No problems at all with this hd, it was fast to transfer all my files. As you can see that I do Love this hd and would be willing have another one when the time come to get another. So I would recommend that whoever it looking to get a hd to get this one.

This is a wonderful portable hd, easy to use, no problems with it. It is fast, great price for it. I will get another one when the times comes. Everyone should have one of these to backup their files. I have used flashed drives, but this is the best device I have ever used. As you can see that I LOVE IT and I highly recommend this portable hd. This portable hd will be easy to take with me, don't take that much space and it is very easy to use. I give you a A+++++++.

Awesome!! Small, Shiny, Compact... I love it!!! If you want faster transfer speed use bigger drive. this is for about 7 to 12 MBPS speed...

This is a good purchase. If you are looking for a HD where to storage all your personal data or to make backups of your files... it's awesome. I pay for the 3 or 2 business day shipping but I get it in one. I recommend it!

This is my 4th my passport. I operate a remote audio recording service, so I need a lot of hard-disk space. But I also need portability and stability. The My Passport series from Western Digital has been an excellent fit. No problems, smooth operation, bus-powered!

This portable drive is fast, great looking, space saving, extremely easy to set up/use,and has a great price tag too!!! For my purposes, mainly storing vids and pics, it has plenty of memory. Needless to say, I LOVE IT and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND it!!! In fact, I'm thinking of buying another one just to have on hand.

I was deciding between the Seagate and this WD Passport. Eventhough I primarily buy Seagate drives, I opted to give the WD Passport a go from the reviews and from a friend's recommendation. So far I am pleased with the build quality and performance. This unit feels more durable than the Seagate does, which will be useful when it's tossed into a bag with other items (i.e. AC power plug, mouse, etc.) As a few reviewers have noted already, the drive takes a very long time to complete a full format (NTFS). I'm not certain why it took as long as it did, several hours, as my 1TB 3.5" drive took 1/2 the time. Aside from the full formatting taking forever, the drive runs great. I have been transferring 4GB's at a time to and from the drive with average transfer rates of 25-30MB/s from another HDD, and 10-15MB/s from a disc. Not much more I can ask for from a small 2.5" drive, that powers up fine with the single USB cable on my desktop and various laptops. And it comes with a 3yr. Warranty, the Seagates come with a 5yr.

Works well for everything I bought it for. Works on both my Macs and PC. Easy to carry around. No power cables and uses just one USB port. Very happy purchase

a little pricey but it worked right out of the box. just plug it in and it's ready to go. very compact and lightweight. it's unobtrusive sitting next to the computer. love the fact that it doesn't need a power supply and turns on and off with the computer.

High capacity for a cheap price. What more can you ask for? Also, a good tip is to remove any software that comes with the drive. I found it to be unnecessary. I'd much rather prefer a simple drag and drop of files, the way drives are meant to be used.

I bought this to upgrade the hard drive of my Thinkpad T60, i.e., I am not using it as a portable hard drive. The drive is not too noisy, and so far it has performed. It has been a month. If you need performance and total quietness you'll need to spend significantly more money. However, for $120 I went from 100G to 500G with reasonable performance and quietness.

I bought these drives to upgrade a couple of macs that I had around the house. It was trivial to re-partition the drive, install a new version of Leopard, and then exchange the new drive with the old one. I now have complete backups of the old system on the original drive in the new package. Everything was as I expected, except that there wasn't a little velvet bag to carry the drive in, as there is if you purchase this drive at Costco. Of course, I pad $25 less at Buy.com!

First this is a easy hookup. Plugs in to PC and it works. took it to work to dump from my Mac. To do so the Mac reformat it and made it a time machine. Which works fine with the MAC. Now when I took it home the Poor PC didn't recognize it..Duh, but don't panic I had DataViz Conversion Plus software that recognizes the Time Machine and all wells that end well!

I bought this for my laptop to hold my Misc file like movies music and pics dose a wonderfull job. I did not install the software that came with it I just explorer take care of it and this seems to weork out just fine. Idid reformat it though so I can store bigger files. the only draw back that I see is that it is shiney and shows fingerprints a lot but that is not realy a major concern as it dose not efect performance.

While I have used other portable hard drives, I have experienced difficulties with some of them and once lost a good bit of data by prematurely disconnecting one during a system backup. This one is expensive but worth the cost because: 1. it is extremely easy to use, just plug it into the computer and it words flawlessly 2. it works very well with Mac's, which all but one of my computers are 3. you pay not only for performance but for the enormous capacity which is more than necessary to do multiple system backups of multiple computers(which was why I bought it in the first place, viz. to use as a system backup for my mac's) 4. I have used it several times to do complete system backups of two different computers and it has worked quickly and without a hint of a problem--it really is a great little external hard drive that works perfectly--definitely worth the money when you consider that it is storing valuable data which if lost would cost far more to recover, if recoverable at all. So I would give it a 5 out of 5.

Western Digital products are always trustworthy. I have both passport and external power WD HDDs and havent had problem with either. 500 GB passport for less than 150 is really good value for money.

I have purchased and continue to use WD 160 GB, 250 GB, and 320 GB passport drives. Now I own the WD 500 GB passport, too. All of these drives have been durable, fast, and very portable. I use these drives to store media and ISO images of DVDs, they work perfectly. They come pre-formatted with the fat32 file system, so I take the time to reformat them to NTFS (to support file sizes larger than 4 GB). The format takes a while, but is worth the time. I use these with Windows/XP, Vista, and Linux laptops and have never had a problem. I highly recommend the 500 GB drive (more bang for the buck) and buy.com is the best place to buy them.

It is extremely light and compact. It is worth every penny. It is working fine. Pretty easy to use. Works fine on my one year old PC and does not work on my five yr old Mac. Otherwise, it is a recommended quality and brand.

Finally!!! I've been looking for a USB powered (no AC adapter needed) 2.5” portable hard drive. This drive works perfectly. But it does require the full 500ma from a standard USB port. Don’t try using it on a non-powered USB hub with other things attached to the hub. It really needs its own single USB port due to the power requirements. But most other 2.5” portable USB drives use the ‘Y’ cable to draw extra power form a second USB port. This one does not and does not need to. And that in itself is fantastic. And with all that said this is awesome! I would prefer to see the 5 year warranty Seagate offers, and I still believe Seagate makes a far superior product, that said, this item is the perfect portable drive.
