I bought this external hard drive mainly to back up my digital pictures. It was very easy to install and use. Now it reminds me (on the schedule I selected) when I may want to do another back-up. I am very pleased with this product, especially for the $79.99 price. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 HARD WORKER AT A GREAT PRICE Saturday, September 06, 2008 sweetphoebelu from Austin, Texas
I bought the SmartDisk to run Time Machine.....I love the Leopard OS, but had not activated Time Machine because I didn't want it doubling the amount of space graphics projects were already taking up. I'd been looking occasionally for an external hard drive to handle Time Machine, but not too seriously. Then projects got bigger, and so did the need for backup.....
I stumbled across the SmartDisk..... Incredible price and free shipping to boot! Plugged it in and they synced right up. SmartDisk has been humming right along ever since. Couldn't possibly have been easier. There's no hot pocket where it sits, seems to run pretty cool. The occasional little whir & flutter lets me know it's on the job. Love it, LOVE IT. 5 of 5 Great Deal Tuesday, August 26, 2008 Bill from Cambridge, MA
Delivery was a little slow, but the drives are fine (I bought two). The price ($79.49 plus tax) was the best I've seen recently for 500 GB drives with no rebate. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 HIDDEN VALUE Saturday, August 23, 2008 jwb from Gilbert AZ
This item looks like it might be a cheap product, But, it is very nice. It works fast and is very silent while running. It is kind of large but this allows it to run very cool. It barely gets warm to the touch. I have only had it a few weeks but, for the price I can highly recommend it. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Affordable and Seems to Work Fine Tuesday, August 19, 2008 cydog from Washington, DC
I ordered this specific external hard drive after looking in stores and searching the internet for good prices. This seemed like one of the best values. I have a Mac G5 that I hooked it up to so I can back up my computer with Time Machine. I've had it a few weeks now and it seems to work just fine. It's small so it just goes on top of my CPU, and it doesn't generate much heat. I've put my hand around it a few times to see how hot it gets and it seems to stay pretty cool. Well, when I got the HDD, it was a little under $80, so that's why the value got a 5. The HDD makes a little noise, but for the time I've had it (about 2 weeks?), it's worked great so far. I'm just glad it didn't come DOA, to be honest, because I wasn't sure (and still am unsure) what kind of internal HDD comes inside these things. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Good Product So Far... Tuesday, August 19, 2008 Scott from Garland, TX
I have had no problems with this drive after 2 weeks of use. Had it out of the box and plugged in and running in 5 minutes. No heat problems, no noise from unit. A little slower than my NTFS HD's (Verbatim comes formatted at Fat32). Great value. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Drive Sunday, August 17, 2008 A Customer from North Carolina
I bought this a few weeks ago and it has worked wonderfully. And, as always, buy.com shipped it right away. Im glad i bought this! Was this review helpful?

Great deal, if only it worked. The box got power, but when I plugged it into the computer it never showed up no matter what. Verbatim support was a PITA to get to, but when I did they were nice, and supplied me with an RMA relatively easily. Hopefully that will turn out good for me. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 It's a Hard Drive Wednesday, August 13, 2008 A Customer from Lake Zurich, IL
I bought this because it was the cheapest 500gb Hard Drive I could find that had a name I had heard of (it was on sale for $85). It isn't amazingly fast, but it isn't slow, it just works. I actaully like it quite a bit, however the power cord has a big box on it (about 3" long x 2 wide x 1 deep). Everything else is great. I'd recommend it. Was this review helpful?
1 of 2 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 WHY FAT32 Format?? Wednesday, August 13, 2008 A Customer from Philadelphia, PA
The harddrive looks nice. but it's been formated to FAT32... that means you can not copy over 4GB Single files on to that device.. Now days who is still using WIN98?? NTFS should be the standard format!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Simple and effective. Wednesday, August 13, 2008 Andrew W from Aiken, SC
I wanted to clean up my desktop computer by transferring hours of video, thousands of pictures, and some rarely used software to external storage. This hard drive was just the thing for me. Simply plug it in and start moving data onto it, and before you know it, your hard drive is cleaned up and your computer's performance is improved. I have no problem recommending this Verbatim product. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Good product Wednesday, August 13, 2008 tohong from Garner, NC
I have an 160 GB Western Digital external hard drive but need more storage space. Even though I was not familiar with the Verbatim brand, I bought this 500 GB drive based on the price and online reviews. I have been very pleased with this purchase so far.
Positive things:
1) Delivery: Buy.Com is still a great company to do business with. The product got delivered as expected (free)
2) Price: excellent price compared to other brands
3) Size: much smaller than the picture indicated. Actually, it is smaller than my 160 GB WD drive.
4) Speed: very reasonable when I backed up my data from my laptop
5) Set up is quite straight forward. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 It May Be A Good Buy But.................. Wednesday, August 13, 2008 A Customer from Santa Cruz Ca.
Don't waste your time with this drive. Poor ventilation causes overheating and drive failure while transferring data. I won't be buying Verbatim again. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Silent and greate performance Tuesday, August 12, 2008 A Customer from Chico, CA
I have only been using the External HDD for a couple of weeks and so far it has been great. Ease of installation, shows right up as the mass storge device and just works :). At boot time my PC sits on it though, that's most likely a BIOS issue, but other than that its great.
I have only had experience with Verbatim's Floppy disks back in the day, and they were great. I am hoping I get good life and performance out of this HDD.
Definitely recommend it, and for $81 (inc. shipping, that's the deal I got), its a steal. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 So far So good Tuesday, August 12, 2008 A Customer from NYC
I bought it, I installed it, I transferred over 15 gigs of pictures and audio and video files, works like a charm, no complaints no malfunctions no delays, its a USB connect so obviosly not the fastest data transfer, but for the price it does not get any better. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great.....So Far Monday, August 04, 2008 kCir from North Carolina
I'm very skeptical of this product but i trust it to be better than other similarly priced models (Got it for under $100). So far so good! I've had this drive for going on one week and it's fine. Runs cool from what I can tell. I always cut mine off after im done with it. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Perfect for extra DVR storage! Wednesday, July 30, 2008 John from El Paso, Tx.
Wow! What a steal! It arrived in 3 days, no problems. Thanks Buy.com for great service. This is a perfect companion for my Dish Network ViP722 HD DVR unit. It's black like the DVR unit and sits nicely on top. I had it up and running in a matter of minutes. Just a quick 2 minute phone call to Dish Network to activate the attached USB storage device and I was transferring content from the DVR to the external hard drive in no time. Piece o' cake! Don't know how long it will last but Verbatim has been in the media business for a long time so I am hoping it will be a quality product like everything else they make. It's quite warm to the touch, especially sitting on top of the DVR unit, so a cooling fan is highly recommended. There is a power button on the back so you can turn it off when not in use. Not much else to say for now, but it looks great and appears to be well built. Was this review helpful?
