This a great product to use with the IMAC with Leopard's time machine. Nothing to do but plug it in. I'm using the firewire it came with. The price was the best from Buy.com. It is very quiet and small.

I've used SmartDisk products for years, and always been both satisfied and pleased. Verbatim's new offering after acquiring SmartDisk is disappointing. The case is of odd-shaped plastic; perhaps as tough as the previously aluminum case, but not nearly as pleasing to the eye or as effective at dissipating heat. The unit gets HOT. Also, for USB use, it requires an external 5V power supply, even from USB ports that routinely support heavy power-drawing items. This wouldn't be that remarkable for a drive of this size, but the drive has no power supply port! Power must be supplied through the USB port, using a funky (provided) two-ended USB cable. Even that failed to work on all four of my computers. Ultimately I had to purchase a 5V power supply that provided power through a USB connector to get it to work at all using USB. Firewire works fine without an external power supply.

Yes you can do a little better $/GB now-a-days, but for the Firewire capability and "no external power required" capability, this drive fits the bill nicely. Nice and quiet. A reliability report will have to come much later. But so far, so good. Also matches the Aluminum PowerBook style very closely. NMH
