I have used Vegas Pro 4, 5 and 7. I still use both 5 and 7 at times. I'm now on a cycle of buying the odd number releases of Vegas Pro, and anticipate getting version 9.
However, I've been pleasantly surprised by Vegas Studio 8. I've yet to make a complicated DVD with the DVD-Architect version which comes with this - but I do make complicated DVD structures - so it will be interesting to find out (stuff you could not possibly do with Pinnacle)
I got Vegas Studio to work with AVCHD from my Canon HF100 - as a get-by for a while.
I'm surprised at how tolerable my single 3GHz CPU (Hyper thread)(4GB main memory) is, when handling the AVCHD with Vegas Studio 8. I also have Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 11 (and have used every version of Pinnacle Studio since the 400) - and Pinnacle is a dog with AVCHD on my configuration - and Pinnacle isn't nearly the editor this is. Use Pinnacle if you are a beginner - use Vegas if you want to edit without many boundaries - but it doesn't take long to pick this up. Editing Canon HF100 AVCHD on my configuration is not 'perfect', but it is certainly tolerable enough to allow me to wait a few more months until a Quad-core is more mainstream - this software literally saved me hundreds.
If you don't really know your way around video editing, or if taking 2-4 hours to really get comfortable with an application which does most everything you could want - is more than you would like - then you may want to start with something a little simpler.
