 Editor's Note
In this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND, Disney presents a fantastic space adventure. Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a teenage boy with a taste for adventure who seems to always be in trouble, much to the chagrin of his hardworking mother (Laurie Metcalf). But when he comes into possession of a high-tech map leading to Treasure Planet where an ancient cache of jewels and gold lies buried, it's like a dream come true. His mother's friend Doctor Doppler (David Hyde Pierce) arranges for a ship, and the two set sail, traversing the universe on course for the treasure. Captain Amelia (Emma Thompson), a domineering feline, is in charge of a rough-and-tumble crew of odd creatures, who may have their own designs on the treasure. Jim is placed under the supervision of John Silver (Brian Murray), the cook, who is both his father figure and his adversary. Slowly but surely the ship makes its way toward its destination, as Jim comes of age, learning to follow his heart, do what's right, and be a leader. With stunning computer animation that combines both space and sea elements, TREASURE PLANET called upon the skills of 350 artists, animators, and technicians. The result is dazzling, colorful, and fast-moving, with some very realistic-looking creatures including variations on spiders, robots, and whales.

| | Professional Reviews | USA Today "...Most noteworthy is the artful way it combines the futuristic and the retro..." 11/27/2002 p.3DVariety "...TREASURE PLANET starts with the clever idea of transforming the story into an old-fashioned space opera, and the animated visuals are handily up to the studio's best..." 11/25/2002 p.22-7 Total Film "...A capable adventure movie....Rip-roaring..." 03/01/2003 p.106 L.A. Times 8 of 10 Treasure Planet is another one for the boys. Disney's latest animated adventure is a hybrid on several levels, starting with relocating Robert Louis Stevenson's classic lads' tale "Treasure Island" in a space-travel world. Although it may sound gimmicky, the notion of setting the popular story of young Jim and the pirate John Silver in a fantasy world based on the planet Montressor (French for "my treasure") turns out to be an excellent, much more appealing one than might be imagined. - Kenneth Turan San Francisco Examiner 9 of 10 ... And best of all, the movie doesn't push too hard or pull too insistently whenever it pauses for those traditionally sentimental touches that are hallmarks of Disney-produced animated fare. A bad, bad man does redeem himself -- sort of -- in the course of the action. And Jim becomes a more responsible young man because of his experiences. But don't let that keep you away: Treasure Planet artfully disguises any morals or messages with wall-to-wall, out-of-this-world thrills and spills. - Joe Leydon James Berardinelli's ReelViews 8 of 10 Treasure Planet is a perfectly pleasing animated action/adventure movie that seems better designed and better motivated than many of the Magic Kingdom's recent forays into hand-drawn motion pictures. It doesn't top Spirited Away for the title of Best Animated Picture of 2002 (Disney released, but did not produce, the Miyazaki film), but it's guaranteed to have a larger audience. And, as family films go, this one offers an engaging and exciting 90 minutes. - James Berardinelli
