 Editor's Note
In Gore Verbinski's remake of Hideo Nakata's chilling horror film, a group of teenagers all die suddenly and inexplicably exactly one week after watching a mysterious videotape at a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest. Journalist Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), a relative of one of the victims, begins an investigation that leads to a mountain resort where she discovers the tape, which contains footage of random and surreal images. After viewing the tape, Rachel receives a phone call stating that she, too, has seven days left to live. As the clock ticks away, Rachel enlists the help of her former boyfriend, Noah (Martin Henderson), who is the father of her startlingly serious young son, Aidan (David Dorfman). Assisted by the intuitive illustrations of Aidan and the initially reluctant research of Noah, Rachel attempts to discover the significance of the cryptic tape before her time is up.
The original RING, based on a novel by Kôji Suzuki, was a cult phenomenon in Japan, spawning a sequel, a prequel, and other spin-offs. Although Verbinski's adaptation shares much in common with its Japanese counterpart, the director distinctly alters numerous plot elements and, in grandiose Hollywood style, employs a much larger budget. The beautiful cinematography is one of the more telling enhancements, along with added screen time for other characters, including the morose Richard Morgan (Brian Cox). However, the key to this RING is Watts, who shines through the creepy atmosphere in a role that follows her success in MULHOLLAND DRIVE. This would appear to be no coincidence, since the film comes across like a David Lynch version of an X-FILES episode that presents shockingly scary moments and makes the most out of the unknown. A clear cut above most contemporary horror films, THE RING offers genuine chills and will make viewers think twice before watching any unmarked videotapes.

3 of 5 Overhyped and Ultimately Disappointing Sunday, July 13, 2003 Bob from Libertyville, IL
This film -- based on an urban legend about watching a videotape causes you to die in 7 days -- will probably leave you scratching your head and wondering what all the hype is about. The plot ultimately makes no sense. I found a real disconnect between modern technology of videotape and the gothic supernatural elements of the story. After we got done watching it, we began laughing about the ridiculous plot holes. There are some nice visual elements (especially in the tape itself) but I found the film a real letdown. And its not even all that scary--but definitely way too long. At least three times when I thought the film was going to end, it tries to tack on another layer of plot. I was very disappointed in this film. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 Not the greatest I have seen... Thursday, March 20, 2003 A Viewer from NY
I have seen my fair share of scary movies and this one was such a joke. It didn't really make much sense. There were SOO many unaswered questions it sort of screwed up the whole movie. It was an ok movie, would I buy it, probably not but I would rent it to see it. I thought the Sixth Sense was MUCH better. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Movie and Great DVD Saturday, March 15, 2003 M. S. from Arcadia, CA
Whether you've seen this movie in the theater or not, it is a great movie to own on DVD. The spooky TV shots are even scarier watching it home alone on your own TV. To see the infamous video which is the focus of the movie, move the red arrow next to "Play Movie" and press the "up" arrow button on your remote. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 DVD SURPRISE!!!! Friday, February 28, 2003 choRingu from Brooklyn NYC --Coming Strong, Staying Strong I
Just found out that The Ring DVD will include the "killer" video from the movie. We never got to see it in the flick but we can on the DVD. In the movie, whoever saw the video got killed -- I just hope it doesn't really work. Great idea that makes the DVD a keeper. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 LOVE it or HATE it Thursday, February 20, 2003 gray from Pleasant Hill, CA
Of the reviews I've read from "professional" and amatuer critics on the web, people either get a few extra white hairs from this movie, or they hate it.
Personally, scary movies never do it for me, and I myself am often interested in darker subjects and art, however after seeing this at The Orinda Theater in the east San Francisco bay area (none of that stadium seating crap), I stayed over at a friends house. I did not want to be alone with my computer, TV, phone, and overactive imagination - and I'm 21.
The movie isnt blatently violent, or graphic (although it has its split second moments) the most damage it does to the audience is letting your imagination get to you.
I actually never plan on watching this movie again, it wigged me out that much. Although I'd love to own the DVD. Just in case. Was this review helpful?

As the Magnificent Seven was to Seven Samurai, The Ring is to the original. It is interesting how many screen shots and dialog were completely lifted from the original. But, this is one of the rare instances where the Hollywood version is actually better than the original. Creepy and chilling this film will be sure to delight the horror fan, that isn't looking for the bad slasher film that Hollywood seems to rewrite over and over. An orignal thoughtful plot that keeps in touch with the alternate horror genre. (dare I say of indipendent film quality?) Much like Blair Witch, you never actually witness the death of anyone..just the horrid impending doom that it is or has happened. One of my top 10... Was this review helpful?
