| Author Bio| Mario Puzo | | Born and raised in New York City's "Hell's Kitchen" as the son of a railroad laborer, Mario Puzo served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and was stationed in East Asia and Germany. He returned to New York and attended the New School for Social Research and Columbia University, publishing his first book, "Dark Arena", in 1955. He continued writing battle stories for a pulp magazine until a Putnam editor approached him in 1965 and offered him $5,000 to write a book about the Italian Mafia. Puzo took him up on the offer and, when "The Godfather" was published in 1969, he achieved instant stardom for chronicling the life of Sicilian mob boss Don Corleone and his extended family. He also co-wrote the screenplay for three of the Godfather films, receiving two Oscars for his efforts. Puzo has written several other novels that focus on the inner workings of organized crime, including "The Last Don" (1996), which was made into a successful television mini-series the following year. On July 2, 1999, just as rumors were simmering that a fourth "Godfather" would be written and adapted for the screen, Puzo died of heart failure at the age of 78 in Bay Shore, New York. |
