From the Publisher:
Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him. Routine, order and predictability shelter him from the messy, wider world. Then, at fifteen, Christopher’s carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbor’s dog, Wellington, impaled on a garden fork, and he is initially blamed for the killing.

Christopher decides that he will track down the real killer and turns to his favorite fictional character, the impeccably logical Sherlock Holmes, for inspiration. But the investigation leads him down some unexpected paths and ultimately brings him face to face with the dissolution of his parents’ marriage. As he tries to deal with the crisis within his own family, we are drawn into the workings of Christopher’s mind.

And herein lies the key to the brilliance of Mark Haddon’s choice of narrator: The most wrenching of emotional moments are chronicled by a boy who cannot fathom emotion. The effect is dazzling, making for a novel that is deeply funny, poignant, and fascinating in its portrayal of a person whose curse and blessing is a mind that perceives the world literally.

About the Author:
MARK HADDON is a writer and illustrator of numerous award-winning children’s books and television screenplays. As a young man, Haddon worked with autistic individuals. He teaches creative writing for the Arvon Foundation and at Oxford University. He lives in Oxford, England.

Annotation:
The 15-year-old narrator is an autistic boy named Christopher Boone who is obsessed with (among other things) Sherlock Holmes. When a neighbor's dog is killed, he decides to track down the real dog-killer. As the events are filtered through the mind of an autistic, they take on their own logic--and are often hilarious. Eventually, by his own eccentric methods, Christopher uncovers truths that are profoundly disturbing, and in the process is forced to extend himself well beyond his usual boundaries. THE CURIOUS INCIDENT is the first work of adult fiction by an acclaimed writer of books for young people. A New York Times Notable Book for 2003.

Chapter One

It was 7 minutes after midnight. The dog was lying on the grass in the middle of the lawn in front of Mrs Shears’ house. Its eyes were closed. It looked as if it was running on its side, the way dogs run when they think they are chasing a cat in a dream. But the dog was not running or asleep. The dog was dead. There was a garden fork sticking out of the dog. The points of the fork must have gone all the way through the dog and into the ground because the fork had not fallen over. I decided that the dog was probably killed with the fork because I could not see any other wounds in the dog and I do not think you would stick a garden fork into a dog after it had died for some other reason, like cancer for example, or a road accident. But I could not be certain about this.

I went through Mrs Shears’ gate, closing it behind me. I walked onto her lawn and knelt beside the dog. I put my hand on the muzzle of the dog. It was still warm.

5 of 5 A Short History of Nearly Everything Thursday, April 17, 2008
A Reader from Chicago, IL

Lovable sarcasm and numbers fill the pages of the book, A Short History of Nearly Everything written by Bill Bryson. Born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1951, Bryson was in the middle of an expedition in England when he met his wife. Bryson wrote his first book, The Lost Continent which became a hit for its sense of humor and truthfulness, about his trips around small town America. Bryson took a number of years writing for two English newspapers, The Times and The Independent. A Short History of Nearly Everything was published in the spring of 2003 in the US. Bryson reached his objective of informing and entertaining the reader with information that is factual and mind blowing because he is so enthusiastic and so knowledgeable that it’s quite hard to get lost! Bryson provides just enough information so that you almost never feel overwhelmed. A Short History of Nearly Everything is constantly bringing you amusing information and never leaves you uninterested. Although, the 500+ pages may leave one weary with their brain full to bursting, many believe this summary of time is not enough to tell the tale of the universe. In addition, many readers love how this book provides a short and sweet grasp of all the basic facts of the general sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, botany, climatology, geology, and many more. In short, I would call this book “A Short History of Everything You Would Want to Know” and I give it four stars out of five. Pick this one up because I guarantee that one will want to astonish one’s mind more than once in their life.
