Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Five For Fighting: John Ondrasik (vocals, guitar, piano); Andrew Williams (guitar, background vocals); Curt Schneider (bass, background vocals).
Producers: Bill Bottrell, John Ondrasik, Curt Schneider, Gregg Wattemberg
Best known for the anthem "Superman (It's Not Easy)," Five For Fighting (AKA John Ondrasik), continues down the same path on the sophomore album, THE BATTLE FOR EVERYTHING, writing songs that fuse thoughtful lyricism with heartfelt piano playing. Teaming up with Sheryl Crow/Shelby Lynne producer Bill Bottrell, Ondrasik succeeds in capturing the spiritual song-craft of his debut, but manages to build on it by adding orchestral flourishes.
Often sounding like a combination of Dave Matthews and John Mayer with a dash of Steve Forbert thrown in, this California native, not surprisingly, shines on slower fare. Chief among these songs is "The Devil in the Wishing Well," with its Elton John-esque arrangement, and the yearning closer "Nobody." Luckily, somberness is not the rule of thumb on this outing, and Ondrasik does occasionally cut loose, particularly on the rollicking "Angels & Girlfriends," featuring some wailing harmonica, and "Infidel," a strike at fundamentalism pumped up with percussion and slide guitar. In a pop landscape littered by shallow sentiment, Ondrasik allows his musical and lyrical emotions to come to the fore and ends up winning THE BATTLE FOR EVERYTHING.

Artist Overview
Five for Fighting is the pseudonym of John Ondrasik, one of the most successful figures in the wave of lite-rock singer-songwriters that emerged in the early 2000s. Singing in the heartfelt lilt popularized by Dave Matthews, Ondrasik plays amiable, radio-friendly tunes that contain just enough rock grit and piano-man swagger to appeal to a fairly wide spectrum of pop fans. He hit the big time with the Five For Fighting smash "Superman" off of 2000s AMERICA TOWN.

5 of 5 Better than the last album! Thursday, April 01, 2004
sweetpisceskt@hotmail.com from Minnesota
I thought this was an excellent CD. I really really liked America town and their other cd (the name escapes me), but I think this is the best one so far. John Ondrosik has such a unique voice, and it's so cool how he sings. It give character to the album. My favorite song so far is Dying. It's just such a mournful song, and its pure beauty.

Five for Fighting has done it again. This is a great cd. It's well worth the money. The music contains all the emotion that can be expected from FFF, and still is unique in it's sound. This is great music from a great band.

Five for Fighting's new album is absolutely amazing. It is one of the very few albums that I like all of the songs on it. The lyrics are beautiful, and sometimes they mean more than they may appear. I highly recommend this album, it is absolutely brilliant!

5 of 5 Even better than the first Thursday, March 25, 2004
ponypoet@aol.com from Hillsborough, NJ
"The Battle For Everything" is a tribute to singer/songwriter John Ondrasik's skill and talent. It is not like other CDs out there. The issues these songs deal with are not just love and losing/finding a girlfriend but real issues that the average person has to deal with everyday. The songs have heartening messages to them and are far from hard to listen to. And the music does not stay in one set mode but ranges from rock to country and nearly everywhere inbetween. No matter what mood you're in, there's a good song on that CD for you. If you've heard "100 Years" on the radio, you'll know that it is one of the most beautiful, meaningful songs ever written. The rest of the CD does not disappoint.

5 of 5 great album! Tuesday, March 23, 2004
Cari from Exeter, NH
Five for Fighting has gotten better with each album! This album is a great mix of different sounds. It shows that John isn't just putting out the same music with the same sound each time. I still have America Town in my truck and listen to it constantly. The Battle for Everything has joined it and will stay there for a long time too! You will not be disappointed with this album.

5 of 5 Brilliant Peace of Art Monday, March 22, 2004
Aaron from Indianapolis
Incredible! This album is beautiful, there as not been such a well written album since Elton Johns Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The Battle For Everything has such smooth piano solos that you could play over and over all day long. Plus John Ondrasiks vocals send it over the top, making this album one everyone needs to invest into.

5 of 5 Another Hit Monday, March 22, 2004
A Listener from Indianapolis, IN USA
The first time I played The Battle for Everything I wasn't sure if I would like it. Because of the first CD and also due to the fact I have seen FFF in concert several times around town over the past couple years I gave it a chance. To get used to it, I played it non stop to and from work and never took it out of my cd player. Now I play it non stop and never take it out of my cd player because I LOVE IT. I'm hooked. Everything about the music is beautiful.

5 of 5 Fantastic!!!!! Sunday, March 21, 2004
fliss from scotland
Five For Fighting have achieved what might have seemed impossible and produced an album, which excels their beautiful 2000 offering, America Town. John Ondrasik has a spectacular voice with an amazing range and is accompanied by incredibly beautiful guitar and piano melodies. His lyrics are captivating; genuinely touching and flow like poetry. There are a diverse selection of tracks to hear- from the fantastic, almost eerie, tale told in The Devil in the Wishing Well, the funky, upbeat Angels and Girlfriends and the kooky fantasy of a song- Disneyland. To the sublime, incredibly haunting melody of 100 Years (my favourite track). Which is guaranteed to melt your heart and bring out goose bumps every time you listen. I also have a soft spot for Dying, a song that captures the exact feelings of a love lost. This is without doubt the best + most unique album I have bought this year and I love it more each time I listen. Highly recommended - a must have!

5 of 5 Amazing! Saturday, March 20, 2004
Emily from St. Paul, MN
There are only two CDs in my collection that I listen to without skipping any tracks. They are "America Town" and now "The Battle for Everything." Five For Fighting has released another masterpiece and it has surpassed all of my expectations! The melodies and lyrics of the pieces create an absolutely unforgettable album! The songs range from soft and sweet like "If God Made You" to quick and fun like "Angels and Girlfriends." A must-have for FFF fans and newbies alike!

5 of 5 A Must-Have For All Music Lovers Saturday, March 20, 2004
Jessica Gilbert from Montreal, QC
This is a must-have album for all Five For Fighting fans and newcomers alike - it should be part of every music lovers collection. It is original with great lyrics and sounds, and must admit that since I bought this album, I just can't get enough of it! All the songs on it are all great, so it really is hard to select favourites. But if I had to pick some, I'd have to say "The Devil in the Wishing Well", "100 Years", "Dying" and "One More For Love".

5 of 5 You will fall in love with this album. Saturday, March 20, 2004
Carrie from Mishawaka, IN
Almost everyone has heard the 9/11 anthem "Superman", but that song, as gorgeous as it is, just barely tips the iceberg of greatness that is Five for Fighting. John Ondrasik, the crux of Five for Fighting, not only displays a tremendous voice, but he is a lyrical genius as well. On Five for Fighting's newest album, "The Battle for Everything," Ondrasik's lyrics and vocals are a highlight of the experience. Having the opportunity to see John in concert last month, I got to see firsthand the passion that he puts into each of his songs. That intense passion also flows through their latest CD. "The Battle for Everything" is one of the few albums that is appealing to people of all ages and musical tastes. The songs on "The Battle for Everything" range from touching ballads like the (already!) hit single "100 Years" to rock songs like "Infidel." The romantics won't want to miss "One More for Love" and "If God Made You," while the cynics will love "Angels and Girlfriends" and "Disneyland." John never fails to touch, enlighten, and humor with his impeccable albums. No need to argue, "The Battle for Everything" is everything a wonderful album can be.

5 of 5 A must have CD Saturday, March 20, 2004
Patricia from New England
Having loved "Superman", I bought The Battle for Everyting after hearing "100 Years". I realized this was no fluke - I really enjoyed the sound of Five for Fighting. John Ondrasik's voice is so unique and pleasing that it sets him above other singer/songwriters. With "100 Years", poetically documenting the stages of our lives, Five for Fighting has once again hit a common chord among us all. My initial favorites on the new CD were "100 Years", "Dying" and "Angels & Girlfriends". "Dying" is a serious love song, while "Angels & Girlfriends" is light and whimsical. I then gravitated to "Maybe I", "Nobody" and "One More for Love". My current favorites are "100 Years" and "Maybe I". The CD is a true gem.

Well I had only heard 100 years when I went and got this cd not knowing if the other songs would be good.........well they were! John Ondrasik and Five For Fighting have an amazing repetoire of songs ranging from the beautifully melodic Devil In The Wishing Well to the slightly blues sounding Angels and Girlfriends. This is an amazing record. It has a wonderful blend of music that will please anyone.......be sure to purchase a wonderful cd like this. You'll Truly Love It. byrdy from Rochester, MN
When I heard the song "100 Years" was when I actually got into Five for Fighting...yeah I've heard "Superman" but "100 Years" was the one that really got my attention. I bought the CD because of that song mainly and after listening to the other songs on FFF's website. John's a great piano player and makes beautiful music. 5s all the way!

Yellsplace@yellseclecticcorner.com from Richland, Washington
This CD has the most beautiful music accompanied by words that evoke feelings of joy, pain, beauty, and love. Listening to this CD from FFF is a trip inside your own head. The song A Hundred Years is my favorite. You really do have only so much time on this earth, what are you going to do with it? This CD is filled with lyrics that memic life. The piano playing is as fine as it gets, throw in some harmonica, guitar and a drum mix in beautiful voices...you have a masterpiece, you have One Hundred Years....You have this CD. Dont let this one get away.
