The Audacity of Hope is Barack Obama''s call for a new kind of politics--a politics that builds upon those shared understandings that pull us together as Americans. Lucid in his vision of America''s place in the world, refreshingly candid about his family life and his time in the Senate, Obama here sets out his political convictions and inspires us to trust in the dogged optimism that has long defined us and that is our best hope going forward.

Annotation:
In a few short years, Barack Obama went from being a relatively unknown freshman senator from Illinois to the successful candidate for the presidency in the 2008 election. His success is sometimes credited to his ability as a public speaker, as evidenced in his stunning keynote address at the 2004 Democratic convention. THE AUDACITY OF HOPE follows his best-selling DREAMS FROM MY FATHER, and it offers the visionary pragmatism of his speeches and the candor of his memoir. Each chapter is a developed essay, whether he is discussing partisanship in Washington, the values we have in common, or the importance of the Constitution. He also writes on the positive side of public service, the role that opportunity plays in America's economic health, the enduring dilemma of race, America's place in the world order, and last but not least, how he feels about his family. The personal side comes through in all as he tells anecdotes about the people and experiences that influenced his thought, and as he strives to connect equally to America's founding principles, its rich history, and its future, which he believes in and which he will help shape.

5 of 5 Good so far Friday, February 20, 2009

I'm only into chapter 1 but he writes very well for a politician without a ghost writer.

5 of 5 Smart! Saturday, January 24, 2009
A Reader from Potomac, MD
I'm in awe. Someone said that as you read this book you keep muttering "He gets it!". And you do. But it's more than that. He's intellectually curious. He wants to know, to understand, to learn. For example, he meets with the CEO of Google who makes a remark about having a tough time finding exceptional software engineers to keep competitive. He then researches this, the impact of economics/globalization/competition and spins an entire educational platform out of it. Talk about the Establishment Clause he'll spin a tale that links Jefferson to Pat Robertson, defends the role of faith in politics while holding the Clause inviolate. So it's more than he "gets it". It's that he "knows it, sees it, lived it". He thinks things thru and doesn't shoot from the hip like a testosterone drive cowboy. And he follows the old adage: "Those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it." He knows his history.
