5 of 5 It works. Monday, March 23, 2009
Ed from Charlotte, NC

I bought the camera because my mother was injured very badly and was in a nursing home. We installed the camera with wireless capability since the nursing home had very good wireless connectivity. I will tell you that it works fine and enabled my and my kids to see my mom and to talk to her over the web every day. If I were to say there were any drawbacks it would be the choppiness of the video over wireless connectivity. The sound would sometimes be out of sync and the frames per second were sometimes slow, but other than that it worked very well. I could not get the DDNS to work properly with TZO. That was not a major issue and I did not follow up on trying to solve it. There is an ethernet jack on the back and if you install it over ethernet the choppiness goes away completely.

5 of 5 This IP camera is a winner. It has functions othe Thursday, March 12, 2009
Tony from Somewhere
I did SO MUCH research on most of the IP camera on the market. I saw the demo of a lot of IP camera on-line, and this Trendnet IP422W camera is the best one so far. I found out that his camera is an OEM product of Fitivision, a subsidery of Foxconn. Anyway, I had a few IP camera in mind such as the popular Panasonic BL-C131, Vivotek, D-link 5220, and a few others but I chose this Trendnet IP422W at the end. Here is why I chose this camera: 1) Lens, and Night Vision. This is only one of the very few IP camera that has Infrared LED that makes the camera function effectively even at total darkness 0 LUX. Even without the IR LED, the lens is excellent under low light condition. This is because of its 1/4 inch CMOS sensor at F2.0. The picture quality beats many other IP camera, including the Panasonic BL-C131 which uses 1/6 inch CMOS. Go on-line at take a look at the demo camera if you don't believe me. FYI, The bigger the CMOS sensor, the better it is for low light condition and the less noise it gets. Being able to see things in TOTAL darkness makes this a PERFECT surveillance camera. Why do you want a camera that cannot see well in low light condition at night? At night is probably the most important part of the day when you need a surveillance camera. This camera beats ALL others in this catergory. The quality of the image is great, but may be not as well as some camera with progressive CCD sensor. Those camera with CCD are a lot more expensive and probably don't have infrared LED or lack some of the functions below. 2) Phone/PDA compatable. I would like to be able to see my camera wherever I go. This camera supports RTSP. This means that I can use my 3G phone or PDA to watch my camera live, smooth video with sound! This even works with iphone with 3rd party software that can view 3pg files. Panasonic bl-c131 on the other hand, can only display static jpeg image on the PDA or iphone. (You can actually get the Panasonic to send mpeg4 files, but it's not mentioned in the manual and you need to do some research to do that.) 3)Full duplex audio. (Built-in mic and speaker output) This is one of the very few camera that has this function. You can actually at the same time listen to and speak to someone/something at the camera, like an intercom. 4)Pan 330° side-to-side and tilt 105° up-and-down from any Internet connection. This camera can rotate at 330 degree, where the Panasonic can only do something like 140 degree. 5) Firefox and Safari browser compatable. Works best with Internet Explorer for full functionality, but also works on Firefox and Safari but w/o sound. Many other camera won't even work on Firefox or Safari. 6)USB port. Very few IP camera has this function. You can actually plug in a USB thumb drive or a harddrive so that you can record image to it, without having to set up a separate FTP. Although, using a FTP can give you better flexibility. 7) Trio stream MJPEG and MPEG4 and 3PG simultanouly. Only newer IP camera has this function, giving you the ability to record/stream different format at the same time. 8)Detachable Wi-fi antenna and WPA2-PSK (TKIP/AES) Not all IP camera support this. Many older ones don't support WPA2 encryption. With detachable Wi-Fi antenna, you can change to a more powerful antenna or a directional antenna. 9)Being able to turn off the green/orange LED. This is a smart function. You have the option to turn off the green/orange LED on the camera, so that people won't notice the camera and it's less annoying. 10)CPU ARM9 base RAM 32Mbyte SDRAM ROM 8Mbyte NOR Flash OS Linux That's more RAM than what you find in many other IP camera. 11) Relative quiet and quick motor. It's annoying to have a noisy motor when the camera turns. The motor is fast, too. 12) GPIO I don't have much use in this one yet, but you never know. Only some professional camera has this function. This allow you to connect to alarm systems or smoke alarm or to make it call a emergency number... I just love this camera because I think it's better than most other camera in the same price range. The tricky part is knowing how to use port forwarding in your router, just like any other IP camera. You may need to change the default http and rtsp port on the Trendnet IP camera if your ISP blocked the ports. (I had to change the http port from 80 to 82). Registering a free dynamic DNS is useful too if you don't have a static IP, so that you can always connect to your camera whenever and wherever you go. This camera is definitely a winner!

4 of 5 Great camera - but there's a catch for web use... Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Mark from Ft. Lauderdale, FL
I researched cameras on and off for several months. Let me say that this camera definitely hit the mark by its price matched with all its features. It has two-way audio, can see almost an entire circle (like 330 degrees), and the software interface for it (browser-based) is pretty good, especially since it give you two zones to define for detecting movement in the camera's view. ONE COMPLAINT... the key feature I was seeking I did not get -- INTERNET VIEWING! If you have a static IP address, then you're all set. But if your IP is dynamic, as is the case with most DSL and even some cable users without paying the ISP more money, then you have a problem. There are third-party solutions out there. I had to write my own, but fortunately I'm a programmer. Many of you out there who want to be able to monitor their home/office/etc while away will want to look at other brands such as Panasonic. Panasonic comes with a free service for viewing your camera(s) online. This is something I think TrendNet should offer, especially since it promotes this camera as an "Internet camera". It's a bit misleading. The support for the camera was very slow in coming (two days to get a response) and when I did hear from them, they tersely told me a "no go" on using with dynamic IP and didn't offer much help. Again, this is a good camera for what it does, but for Internet viewing while away from its location, consider other brands.

5 of 5 422w is not too bad Monday, June 23, 2008
A Customer from florida
right out of the box i was able to run throught the setup and get it up and running, even the wireless was easy to setup. where it gets complicated is the email/ftp forwarding of pictures and remote access, you need experience with your router's webpage and making modifications. i have verizon fios and it took some time to get the email/ftp to work correctly. overall this is a decent camera for the price, images are relatively clear and the night function is good, i can see clearly across the room and the motion activation works great.

5 of 5 Great indoor camera Saturday, June 07, 2008
A Customer from Gulf Coast TX
Got this a few days ago. Very easy to configure. Had mine set up on my wireless network in minutes. Much better video quality than I expected for this price. Definitely meant to be used indoors in low light. When I point it out the window, the image just washes out and goes all white. But indoors, with normal lighting, the image is great. Night time image is very good. The built-in IR LEDs work well to about 20ft or so. Beyond that, things are pretty dark. I tried an experiment and turned on a desk lamp with a very low power fluorescent bulb and the camera had enough light to see everything in the house in full color. Really good low light performance. The microphone is also very sensitive. Almost too sensitive. It picks up every sound in the house. I can hear the ceiling fan, air conditioner, TV in another room, people talking in other rooms etc. Has 2-way audio but haven't tried it yet. Super easy to operate. You don't need any special software to remotely view, just Internet Explorer. You can view with Firefox, but you lose some features. When viewing remotely over the Internet, you can click on any point in the image and the camera centers itself on that point. Tons more options and features but, you can read about them on the manufacturers website. If this had a true optical zoom, it would be just about perfect but, full Pan Tilt and Zoom cameras cost a lot more than this one. Overall, very pleased with this camera.
