Such reservations are put to rest by even a cursory listen to SUSPICIOUS MINDS. The two-disc collection captures the period just after Elvis' famous "'68 comeback." He was rediscovering his roots and getting gloriously gritty and funky. It would be the king's last hurrah before descending into Vegas showbiz glitz. | | These 1969 recordings were all made in Memphis under the sure hand of producer Chips Moman and his eminently soulful Muscle Shoals cohorts. Elvis takes on everything from country ("From a Jack to a King") to churning, gutsy R&B ("Power of My Love") with abandon. Even those already familiar with this material will find reason to cheer in the inclusion of several previously unreleased alternate takes. | Engineer: Al Pachucki |
| | Artist Overview | | "Before Elvis, there was nothing," John Lennon once said. An overstatement, of course, but Elvis Presley's ascendance to superstardom in the mid-1950s kicked off a musical and social revolution whose impact has yet to abate. After the charming young man from Tupelo, Mississippi was discovered by Sun Records honcho Sam Phillips, the wise studio owner took Presley under his wing, leading to the landmark recording of his first single, "That's All Right (Mama)." The rest, of course, is well-documented history, with Elvis going on to conquer the pop charts, the box office, and beyond. He truly was the King, and his blend of country, pop, and R&B became the cornerstone of rock & roll. |
