When he burst into her antiquities shop in Rome, Lavinia Lake knew Tobias March was nothing but trouble. He said he was in pursuit of a killer and was trying to save her. When March took her back to England, Lavinia hoped that she would find a way to repay Mr. March. Lavinia could never imagine how they meet again, or that he'd become more deadly--and more compelling.
From the Publisher:
AMANDA QUICK’S trademark is a bestselling combination of suspense, passion, and sparkling wit in historical tales alight with intrigue. Now she serves up the most tantalizing novel of her career as an enterprising woman allies herself with a mysterious spy, only to be caught up in a torrid brew of treachery–and temptation....

SLIGHTLY SHADY

From the moment the stranger burst into her antiquities shop in Rome, Lavinia Lake knew he was nothing but trouble. He said he was in pursuit of a killer. He swore he was only trying to save her. Yet Lavinia was convinced that Mr. Tobias March was bent instead on destroying her. When the self-described spy hustled her all the way back to England, Lavinia vowed she would find a way to repay him in full. She never dreamed that Mr. March had in fact been telling the truth, that he had been hired to track down a powerful villain. And just as his investigation was heating up, he found it complicated by the most ungovernable, exasperating–and slightly shady–woman he had ever met. Lavinia most certainly never dreamed they would meet again, forced into partnership under shocking circumstances–or that their fiery disputes would spark a sizzling desire as overwhelming as the danger they faced....After her shop in Italy is destroyed by a stranger and she becomes the target of a blackmailer who turns up dead, Lavinia Lake joins forces with Tobias March, a private investigator hired by a secret employer, to uncover the truth, save her reputation, and find the sole surviving member of a dangerous criminal gang. Reprint. After her shop in Italy is destroyed and she becomes the target of a blackmailer who turns up dead, Lavinia Lake joins forces with Tobias March, a private investigator, to uncover the truth and save her reputation.
Annotation:
When private investigator Tobias March catches Lavinia Lake at the scene of a murder, it doesn't take him long to realize that she's innocent. But not everyone else agrees with him. Tobias and Lavinia join forces and descend into the London underworld in an effort to clear Lavinia's name.

Jayne Ann Krentz, who writes under numerous pseudonyms, received a B.A. in history from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and a master's in library science from San Jose State University. She worked for years as a librarian at Duke University and at other libraries. Krentz writes many different kinds of romances under her various bylines, but themes such as loyalty and trust are present throughout her work, from her historical romances to her more contemporary romantic suspense novels. In an attempt to help others through her own success, she established the Castle Humanities Fund at her alma matter, UCSC, which enables the library to purchase books it would otherwise be unable to acquire. Krentz has also contributed to elementary schools in Seattle, hoping to provide as many children as possible with the books they need to learn.

Prologue

The intruder's eyes blazed with a cold fire. He raised a powerful hand and swept another row of vases off the shelf. The fragile objects crashed to the floor and shattered into a hundred shards. He moved on to a display of small statues.

"I advise you to make haste with your packing, Mrs. Lake," he said as he turned his violent attention to a host of fragile clay Pans, Aphrodites, and satyrs. "The carriage will leave in fifteen minutes, and I promise you that you and your niece will be aboard, with or without your luggage."

Lavinia watched him from the foot of the stairs, helpless to stop the destruction of her wares. "You have no right to do this. You are ruining me."

"On the contrary, madam. I am saving your neck." He used a booted foot to topple a large urn decorated in the Etruscan manner. "Not that I expect any thanks, mind you."

Lavinia winced as the urn exploded on impact wit
