Let's get one thing straight: a lullaby is a lullaby, written to be one. Sure, one can take any song and knock off its edges, intent, and dynamics, slow it down and sweeten it up, sugar it with bells, chimes, and synthesizer effects, and turn it into what passes for a lullaby in the broadest sense, but it's still a kind of cruel joke in the end when a song like Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run," an anthem about breaking out and away from everything that suffocates and constrains, is turned into a soulless, lighter-than-air melody whose only intent is to lull one to sleep. Yeah, it sounds delicately pretty here. But it's "Born to Run." It's not supposed to be delicate and pretty. It's like teaching kids that tigers are cuddly. They're not. ~ Steve Leggett |
