| For the soundtrack to the 2004 Hollywood movie SHALL WE DANCE? (a remake of a beloved Japanese film of the same name), music producer Randy Spendlove assembled an eclectic set of songs, all focusing on the romantic and/or dance elements of the picture. The buoyant, Latin-tinged "Sway," performed by Pussycat Dolls, leads the track list, followed by GoTan Project's electronica-tango fusion "Santa Maria." British jazz-pop wunderkind Jamie Cullum offers up "I Could Have Danced All Night," and Mya adds a bit of hip-hop-heavy R&B with a bass-heavy take on David Bowie's "Let's Dance." However, the collection's most surprising and unusual track proves to be Peter Gabriel's rendition of the Magnetic Fields' "The Book of Love." This spare song highlights Gabriel's plaintive vocals, which rest on a lush bed of strings, and sums up the romantic sweep of SHALL WE DANCE? | |
