The nuts and bolts of the irresistibly danceable music called tejano are pop, rock, polka, R&B, and Latin influences. To millions of fans there's another vital ingredient: the dynamic singer Selena.

Selena is the vibrant story of the Grammy-winning singer whose life ended at its ceative peak. Pulsating with Selena's voice on the soundtrack, the film is powerfully authentic. In the title role, Jennifer Lopez captures the warmth and electricity of a beloved entertainer. Edward James Olmos, Jon Seda and others also shine in "a poignant, heartwarming movie that deserves a standing ovation" (Jules Peimer, WKDM-Radio/New York).

Editor's Note

A celebration of the life of Tejano princess Selena Quintanilla Perez, the rising star who was gunned down by the president of her own fan club in 1995. Amid the racial tensions and economic hardships of 1980's South Texas, the daughter of a Mexican immigrant (himself a failed doo-wop singer) grows up to be a sensation in the blossoming Tejano scene before meeting a tragic end. Light on insight, this biopic revels rather in Selena's on-stage achievements. Selena's father is credited as an executive producer to the film.

5 of 5 selena Saturday, December 15, 2007
Donna from Edmonton AB

Selena was a rare gem, her powerful voice with it's many facets was as beautiful as Selena was herself. The combination of her voice, her charisma and her beauty will not be seen together in one person anywhere, on any continent again. She will always remain unique. The world was robbed of this beautiful talent and personality, we are still grieving.

4 of 5 A Somewhat Weak Script, but Excellently Rendered Wednesday, September 29, 1999
Petronius Arbiter II (Petronius_II from Albuquerque, NM
Both the good points and bad points of 'Selena' are ironic. Jon Seda looks a lot like Chris Perez, but unlike his performance on 'Homicide,' he doesn't have quite the right chemistry with his costar. Jennifer Lopez doesn't resemble Selena that closely, but her acting is so superb, and the lip-synching to Selena's actual voice so well done, that she makes us believe she IS Selena. And what a voice! Much of this movie, unfortunately, is one long music video interspersed with snippets of biography. Apparently the filmmakers thought Anglo viewers would need that in order to know what all the fuss was about. We don't. I would rather have seen a bit more biography, but it was a good idea to just briefly give us the bare facts about Selena's horrifying murder; that much is irrelevant to how she lived her life, and how she used that voice: with an amazing mix of passion and discipline, love and diligence, polished skill and raw talent.

5 of 5 SELENA- THE MOST WONDERFUL FILM A BOY COULD SEE Friday, September 24, 1999
William J. Badurina from Grove City, OH
I love Selena. The singer, the music, the movie! Very few people have touched my life in the same way this beautiful Latino princess did. Her death and the events surrounding it were a tragedy that the world has yet to recover from. This movie beautifully captures the magic of Selena. I have watched this film nearly 18 times as of this review, and each time I leave it teary-eyed. Films like these only come along once in a lifetime. Do yourself and your family a favor. Buy Selena.

4 of 5 Good story with tragic ending Saturday, May 15, 1999
A Listener from Dallas, TX
This movie accuratly protrays the incredible career of one the most talented singers there was. This movie highlights the budding career of an up and coming mexican-american singer whose life was cut short. Whether you enjoy Latin pop music or not, this movie is very entertaining. Though sad, it highlights Selena's talents and who she was and what a major world star she was about to become. This is also the definate starting point of an up and coming career for Jennifer Lopez who protrays the fallen pop star Selena.
