SanDisk Sansa e200 Series Review
By: Grahm Skee - Anything But iPod
Published on: 3/27/2006 2:26 PM
The SanDisk Sansa e200 series includes the e250, e260, and e270. The 2GB, 4GB, and 6GB are a new breed of high capacity flash based MP3 player set to compete in features, as well as price, with the Samsung Z5 and iPod Nano. The Sansa e200 has a few advantages over the two, such as a brilliant 1.8” screen, video playback, expandable memory, and a user replaceable batter....read the full review

3 of 5 Headphone jack broken Monday, July 28, 2008
gman from Verona, WI

have had e250 for two years now, but mysteriously the headphone jack is broken. Have tried multiple sets of headphones, but cannot get sound out of one or both earpieces. All I get is popping and in and out sounds from the device.

5 of 5 GREAT CHOICE Tuesday, July 01, 2008
A Customer from Midlothian, TX
This MP3 player is a great alternative to the pricier IPOD. I am pleased with the ease of use with the exception of downloading audiobooks to the unit. I have faith customer service can walk me through it with ease. The e250 is small but still easy to navigate. Overall, I am very happy with the Sansa e250.

3 of 5 Great player - several 'catches'. Monday, May 26, 2008
Jon D. from San Diego, CA.
For a player that looks and feels so good, I was not very pleased when I found that my e250 / 2Gb player has two serious flaws. Firstly, there are two versions in the market - v1 and v2. The v2 is, I understand, able to play back AUDIBLE audio books. The unit I got from buy.com is v1, and therefore can't play my Audible files. (Buy.com never said their e250 did play Audible, but neither did it make it clear which version the player was). The second major down for me is more a design flaw. Although the player has a micoSD expansion slot, this can be used only to store audio files for playback. So, don't get any ideas of putting several movies on a card. The files will copy OK, but the unit can't play them. So, double check carefully before you buy. As with all technology purchases, assume nothing!! Having said that, for the price buy.com are selling these, they make a great basic MP3 player!

4 of 5 Sansa e250 Sunday, May 25, 2008
ggun from Fortuna, CA
This is a nice little unit. Very compact yet the graphics are good. The screen seems to scratch a little easy, but controls are convenient. The menu is pretty staight forward, but the music menu could be better organized. sometimes it freezes up and I have to power off and start up again. Sound quality is good, radio is good. I am happy so far.

2 of 5 Not really meant for podcast listening Friday, May 16, 2008
mattgb1 from Brooklyn, NY
It's sleek, glitzy, beautiful, with great sound... but that's for people who just want music. I'm a pod-cast listener. I like to download the news and other programs (mostly NPR and BBC) so that I can listen while I'm on the run, commuting, shopping, and so on. What I need is something very easy to use and operate by tactile control, so that I don't have to take my eyes off the road or anything else. I'm still using a battered old Zen Nano that's literally held together by scotch tape because (1) its controls for cueing, skipping, deleting and all other forms of navigating, are performed by a sort of "joy stick" that I can feel and operate without looking, and (2) it comes in a case that clips to my belt. This product has neither.</B> I bought this in the hope that I could finally retire my battered old Zen. No such luck. This item, gorgeous as it is, will probably spend the rest of its life in some drawer… or until I can find a teenager to give it to. Aside from the podcast-related issues, there are aspects of its ergonomics that really need improving, like menu navigation and better button design. PS – Can anyone suggest a good replacement for my Zen that has the features I need? I bought the Zen Muvo, but its plug-in USB interface and slower transfer speeds are not friendly to my setup at home. If you send your advice to mattgb1 at gmail dot com, I'd appreciate it.

5 of 5 Sounds Good, Major Problems Connecting Wednesday, April 09, 2008
A Customer from Moss Beach, CA
This unit sounds good and has a lot of great easy to use features. Connecting to your computer is not one of them. After a while, it becomes almost impossible to get the unit to be recognized by the computer. You try and try, eventually sometimes it works, but less and less often. I have nothing but perfect, legitimate files, and it still does not work. If you ever load a less-than-perfect file, you might as well reformat your unit. That is, IF you can connect. And if you go to Sansa's forum, you will see that you need to have a PHD in computer science to even begin to resolve your issues. So great unit soundwise, but as far as usability is concerned, this is COMPLETE and UTTER JUNK! Unless you want to be really frustrated, do not buy this unit (I have two, and think I'll throw them away, the cost in labor to make them work is way more than buying a more usable unit).

5 of 5 Finally a bite out of Apple Wednesday, December 05, 2007
A Customer from Washington, DC
Looks great, sounds good, great features, at the price of an ipod accessory --my 3G ipod is headed for a future as a hard drive! As someone that carries around an old 40Gig ipod and a voice recorder, and wishes I could still get radio, this baby is a dream come true. My only wish is that future versions of this product and/or firmware allows for higher quality sound recording - 32K is a joke, and the mic seems pretty poor too.

1 of 5 What happened? Monday, December 03, 2007
Dissatisfied customer from New York City, NY
I've read the reviews before I made the purchase of the product three weeks ago, but it just turned out opposite of what I expected. The only features that actually works are the Music and Radio. The videos and pictures are malfunctioning, and the channels require additional premium account in order to have access to them. I've notice that I am the only one that have those problems, so I was not going to rant about it...but then today, even my left earphone went malfunction, which really irritated me the most!! I am seriously upset about it.

5 of 5 Better Than the Nano Saturday, December 01, 2007
A Customer from USA
Tough, reliable, nice features. Good price FM Radio is pristine quality. Graphic User Interface Make the Ipod interface look old. Much easier to use than the Ipod. I mastered the e250s features in about half the time of the ipod. You can't go wrong with this.

5 of 5 So far, so good Friday, November 30, 2007
Rachel C from Harwich, MA
I have only had my SanDisk Sansa (the 2GB model) for about 2 weeks, but so far I am pleased. I have loaded lots of music on it, stashed a few photos and used the voice recorder and radio. Everything works as advertised and the sound and image quality are good. Lots of neat little extra features - like the custom EQ option - are unexpected plusses. It boots quickly and the battery life before recharging is generous. Transferring files to and from the Sansa is pretty foolproof so long as you are familiar with Windows Explorer or can sync it with a program like Media Player. The controls and buttons take a little practice and not all the menus are immediately understandable. But I only had to refer to the manual a few times! I have not tried the iPod, so I dont have that to compare it with, but it sure beats my previous 128MB player.

4 of 5 Great Value Thursday, November 29, 2007
Rabid Bovine from Cincinnati, Ohio
Pros = Cost, Sound Quality & Size. Cons = Supplied Head phones, Flexibility of Menus & Locks up (Memorize the Reset Sequence). Need to offer more easily accessable functions for the Wheel (via firmware upgrade). Need the ability to delete files directly from unit (not only when connected to the computer). Need function to rotate pictures (Landscape/Portrait) from unit.

A Customer from Wolfeboro,NH
I got the Sansa e250. I am new to the world of MP3 players. This was easy enough to learn how to use and I am enjoying it. I have 2GB and it is nearly full already...so I need to learn how to delete stuff.

5 of 5 Great item! Highly recommended. Thursday, November 29, 2007
Adal from Dallas, TX
I purchased Sansa e200 about a month ago and I really like it. This mp3 player has everything i need. It works just like an Apple Ipod but at a much cheaper price. I doubted at first to purchase it because i wasnt too sure how cheap it would look but i was pleasantly surprised. It looks very expensive, I actually have had two of my friends purchase a Sansa e200 after seeing mine. If you are looking for an MP3 to go to the gym with or just to have to listen to music then this is the item. THE GOOD- Great look. Bright screen. Vivid colors. Sound quality is excellent. Holds big amounts of music. Charges quickly. Battery life is great. THE BAD- Not many accessories to choose from (carriying case, arm band, etc.). The wheel on the center, as mentioned before, does feel cheap but you'll get used to it. Navigating through the controls can get stressful at first. lol. Overall I think this item is definitely worth the money. And buy.com does have one of the cheapest prices around. I highly recommend this item!

5 of 5 sansa e 250 Wednesday, November 28, 2007
A Customer from parsippany, nj
This player is a great investment for anyone who would like an mp3 player without spending a lot. The initial setup was a little difficult, but once I updated from their online page things went smoothly. The radio even works good although you have to move the headset wires around to get reception sometime. Overall I am satisfied with the product.

3 of 5 mp3 not recognized by computer Wednesday, November 28, 2007
A S from Cartersville, GA
After using my e250 for one week, my computer would no longer recognize the player. The only fix is replacement, but SanDisk has been easy to work with. The player and features are great - I am looking forward to receiving my replacement.

5 of 5 Listen while charging Tuesday, October 09, 2007
Tim from Salem, VA
Ian's solution works which allows the unit to be fully functional while it is charging but the other review that says you can "plug it in while the unit is off" may work on their PC but it does not work on my PC. Ian's solution says to plug it in half way until you see the charge symbol, wait 15 seconds, then plug it the rest of the way in. This works.

5 of 5 Check out Rockbox Firmware Tuesday, October 09, 2007
Tim from Salem, VA
Check out the 3rd party (open-source) Rockbox firmware for the Sansa e250 at http://www.rockbox.org/ You can dual-boot to Rockbox or the original firmware. It has a lot more features and you can play games on your player! Definitely worth loading but it still has a few bugs here and there.

4 of 5 One feature missing Sunday, August 26, 2007
Gary from Chicago IL
Bought it to listen to downloadable audiobooks which use WMA DRM. Works great except one feature which would be nice to have when listening to long audiobooks. Does not have ability to set a bookmark to indicate where you stop. Otherwise great value.

1 of 5 Disappointed Monday, August 06, 2007
dppilcher from Dover, OH
When I purchased this I had a cheaper San model. I thought this would be an upgrade but I couldn't sync it with Audible and of course, itunes wouldn't work. 7 days later I purchased an Ipod Shuffle. Awesome. Don't do what I did. Get an ipod.

4 of 5 DECENT AUDIO PLAYER WORTH YOUR $$$$ Thursday, July 19, 2007
A Customer from Brooklyn, NY
PROs: The control and buttons are good. very responsive. The wheel is very useful in navigating through songs. The case feels so good and strong. And the battery can give u at least 15 hours and at most about 20 hours. CONs: since I listen to songs in different languages, it is a BIG BOO to me because This sansa e250 doesn't have unicode support. As of today, you can only get the chinese font with the chinese setting on. That means you can't get chinese font with english is set.

5 of 5 This Sansa is great Saturday, July 14, 2007
FenderMan from Chandler, AZ
Since I've had this Sansa player, I've only had a couple of problems. I had a problem with it turning on when I plugged it into my pc a couple of times, but it's worked great ever since. Might have been a glitch. The shuffle feature when playing mp3's could probably be re-written because it will play some songs more than others and some songs never at all, and some songs obviously less than others. That could be fixed with a simple firmware flash, once they fix the shuffle feature. Everything else works absolutely awesome. I'm glad I bought this. Some people say, oh, it's not an ipod. Yeah, I can drop this and be fine. You can't drop an ipod. Although, I wouldn't suggest intentionally dropping it of course. Great buy! I use it every day at work.

5 of 5 I LOVE IT! Friday, July 06, 2007
Lee Ann Applebay from Goleta, CA
I love this player. I have nothing negative to say about it. It is easy to navagate, easy to operate, great display, great sound. I am and do recomend any Sansa product. If you are thinking about a Ipod check this out first. Better than an ipod it think. If you want to ask me about it, email me at lapplebay@cox.net.

5 of 5 IPOD Killer Monday, July 02, 2007
A Customer from wayne, nj
Yeah so what apple dominates the mp3 market....the Sansa e200 has more features (video, pics, FM radio and voice recorder) all in a package about the size of the Nano but thicker. The main plus is that you don't have to use the Itunes software to convert your files. The Sansa is very intuitive....no need to read the instructions. We are very happy with it and easy to accessorize as well.

1 of 5 It broke within 1 week of receiving it. Saturday, June 30, 2007
Lindsey Saunders from Great Falls, Montana
I loved the SanDisk Sansa e200 when I did use it. Then when I plugged in the USB cable it FRIED the player. It shouldn't be able to die that easily. It won't turn on or off, it just has a blue screen.

5 of 5 great mp3 (multi-media) player Tuesday, June 26, 2007
Chris from Farmington, CT
This is a great product, I recommend it! It does all that it says and its great. Just be aware of some minor error when uploading videos or pictures, at first it gives an error but just try it a couple of times then you will not have any issue ever again., Make sure when you install the converter software that you will need to re-start your computer...etc.., they don't mention that. The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the volume, it only has Normal or High...no in-between?...unless I havn't figured it out yet...?...anywas I strongly recommend the 2g...if the price is right get the 4g or higher ...

4 of 5 What do I think about Sansa e250 Tuesday, June 26, 2007
thangd2000 from Houston, TX
Everyone are trying to compare any kind of mp3 player with ipod. I will do the same here since I tried ipod first then switched to Sansa e250. For the quality of sound, my professional ears can tell that sound from ipod is a little bit better but ipod is lack of EQ setting compare to Sansa e250. Meanwhile the sound come out from Sansa e250 is very good. Most of my friend cannot tell the different (sound) from ipod and Sansa. I use Sansa e250 to play the background music while I play guitar and sing, so the pop noise (of Sansa) when I power up the unit somehow bother me (this is not the case for ipod). Maybe this problem will not bother you because the pop noise is not that bad if you using the earplug not thru the sound system like my case. For the ease of use, as you may already know you have to use iTune in order to interface with ipod. I tried the ipod video (5th generation) the add/delete pictures/video in ipod is painful. Unless you buy some other 3rd party software. With Sansa, you can use Windows Media Player (WMP) to add/delete picture/video and music easier. You can do this thru WMP or thru browsing logical drive (since Sansa can be powered on in 2 different mode). I have a little bit of hard time to get familiar with how to use Sansa e250 at full blow because Sansa website will not tell you in detail about how to operate WMP and Microsoft will tell you about WMP but not particular for Sansa (WMP was made for many other media player like Sansa e250). So I end up that I spend times to experience the unit with WMP and write the note for myself. By the way, Sansa come with the utility to convert many video format when you drag and drop video file to Sansa. Video play with bright and clear picture too. Convert video for ipod is something else which I don't even bother to try out. All in all, Sansa is better for me since I bought it for sale (from Buy.com)and the price is 1/3 of ipod. Of course it's not all the time you can get this kind of deal. I'm happy with Sansa e250.

4 of 5 acceptable overall Tuesday, June 26, 2007
Peter from Minneapolis
Despite the existence of mass storage mode on the device, this player is not sufficiently compatible with Macs. The XNJB project and the Rockbox project offer promising alternatives to connectivity and stock firmware, respectively, but neither is production-ready.

A Customer from Dallas, Tx
I ordered an armband for my Sansa MP3 player from Buy.com - as usual the item arrived sooner than I expected. (They said it would be shipped in 1 to 2 business days - I had in unpackaged and strapped on the day after I ordered it!) That's about the 10th item I have ordered through Buy.com and I have been VERY pleased every time - whehter it's electronics, books, or cables.

5 of 5 Sansa e250 CAN play while USB charging! Friday, June 15, 2007
Ian Paterson from Rochester, NY
I just bought this player and have been determined to find solutions to its shortcomings. The one that nearly everyone has been griping about (and which annoyed me to no end) was not being able to play music while using the USB charger. Tonight, while experimenting, I discovered the solution: As you are plugging in the USB charger, first the charging begins, then as the plug is inserted farther, the connection is made with the computer. Insert the USB adapter about 1/2 into the player, watch the screen for the charging icon. When you see the charging icon, WAIT about 15 seconds. If you do this too fast, it will just stop the music and connect to the computer. Insert the plug the rest of the way and now you're listening to music (player is fully functional, in fact) while charging! This may require the latest firmware to work properly, I am not sure. I love the e250!

5 of 5 Very nice for the price! Wednesday, June 13, 2007
A Customer from san antonio, tx
I've been pleasantly surprised by the usability and reliability of my SanDisk e250 I recently purchased. After reading the reviews here and elsewhere, I was concerned about the frequent mentions of service needed. However, I've had this player for about a month now and have encountered no problems thus far. I did download the latest firmware on day I received it, so maybe that helped solve some of the problems I've been hearing about. The sound quality is very nice and I've found the user interface to be easily navigatable. The only minus I can find is the the menu buttons are slightly hard to hit with the wheel in the way, but I haven't found that to be a problem thus far - just hit the wheel along with the button and you're fine. Since I bought the iTrip car fm tuner/charger as well, I haven't had any problems keeping the batteries charged. Highly recommend this product!

5 of 5 Beautiful!!! Thursday, June 07, 2007
A Customer from Massachusetts
I loved this MP3 player, I love how the wheel on the MP3 player tuns on into a blue light when turning it clockwise and counter wise motion. I like how well it works with Windows Media Player, and how long the battery lasts when charging it for a long time, battery can last up to 4 hours or more when charged completely. I would recommend this one as well.

4 of 5 Better than IPOD Wednesday, June 06, 2007
A Customer from Sheboygan, WI
Outstanding battery life. Great sound. Easy to set up. Value is tops. I use this in my car, while mowing the lawn and on my motorcycle. BUT do yourself a favor and get a decent pair of earplugs. I have used every cheap brand out there and NOTHING beats a good pair of earbuds that sound good and don't hurt your ears! I don't know how people can use the cheapies. What I don't like...terrible users manual. Can't make play lists...at least I could only find ONE to add songs to so far. The controls are small...but thats OK. Screen is VERY bright..but still washes out in the direct sunlight. I though I would use FM radio more...but MP3's sound so good I have not used the FM radio too much yet. Maybe when I am sick of MP3's. Expandable unit...so no need to buy an 8 gig, memory is always getting cheaper, so when you need to add space...buy it cheap and keep several cards with different music! USER replaceable battery. When your IPOD battery fails..tough luck! Buy one.

2 of 5 Do not use the Sansa E250 for Audio books!! Wednesday, June 06, 2007
timtraub from Orleans, MA
This unit may be great for music but for audio books its horrible. The fast forward and reverse are slow as death and if you let off the FF and push down quickly to restart it resets the location back to 00. If by chance you hit the Record button [conveniently? located along the left sidewhere your figures rest when holding it] while listening to your book it overrides the book and resets the location back to 00! To get back to the middle of a 7 hour book takes upwards of 15 minutes of constant heavy pressure on the FF button. iPod's functionality is far superior as is Creative's. This poor functionality runs throughout their line of products so avoid SANSA if you are an avid audiobook enthusiast.

4 of 5 Good enough for the price. Sunday, May 27, 2007
Tee from Yonkers, NY
I paid a good price for this player. its works fine now that im use to the controls. i dont like the media conveter. it is very slow and when converting movies it actually makes the file bigger. videos and pictures are nice and clear on this player. i recommend short video clips rather than full lenth movies. ive noticed this player does not like long and multiple ff or rw. i was watching a video and i wanted to ff to a different part of the video (the ff and rw is slow also) and the video and sound would be outta sync for a bit but would come together in a few seconds(the 1st time it froze on me). music play is fine no problems here. pics no problems there. but i did hear of the sandisk players being known for freezing which happened to me about 3 times the 1st week. i had to pop the battery out and put it back in for it to unfreeze. ive this player about a month now and havent had any problems since the 1st week. earbuds are nice and have nice sound but the cord is kinda short. the buttons on the player are kind of thin too me (i have big hands) the jog wheel also feels kinda flimsy. all and all im satisfied with my purchase.

4 of 5 Great for my needs Friday, May 25, 2007
elessar1954 from Provo Utah
I have found this item to be a great buy for the money and very easy to use. Ease of use, automatic battery recharge every time you connect up to your pc, replaceable battery, FM radio, voice recorder, video, photos, it fits all my current and possible future needs. A great little product for those who don't want to buy into the apple mania.

5 of 5 What a sweet little device..!!! Wednesday, March 28, 2007
Mike from Pensylvania
I am very happy with my purchase of my Sansa E250 2gig Mp3 player. The unit itself is very small and durable and really does sound pretty good. The fact that it works with windows media player is just absolutely sweet! It makes ripping a song off of an existing CD easy as pie and quick as anything, it comes with a nice USB cable and charges right from that same port off of your computer. Oh by the way it is also capable of a memory upgrade via micro SD memory slot, it's a little slot on the upper right side of the device. Can't say enough good about it so far..! Don't spend the $$ on an Ipod equivalent, all you are going to get is a larger price tag as a result!!!

4 of 5 Cheaper and equivalent to iPod Tuesday, March 20, 2007
A Customer from Boston
I purchased the Sansa e200 because of the price and was extremely happy about the looks and performance. I used several types of mp3 players and this was the only one that I feel is comparable to the iPod. One of the reasons I did not want to go with an iPod is because I always have issues with the iPod's reliability. My last shuffle died by loading in a bad driver update from Apple. With scandisk's reputation with flash drives I think there will be much less issues with performance. The best part is that the Sansa e200 worked easy with Linux and Mac. I cannot use the software but I had no problem loading mp3 player as a flash drive. The interface is great and there is no problem figuring out how to navigate effeciently. When you need to make an action usually your first guess is the correct one. This is the main part that no other mp3 player has been able to compete with iPod until now. I will not say this product is perfect. I have two issues with it: the plastic volume control is ugly and because it sticks out it makes it difficult to press some of the other key buttons, and without the Microsoft software it is extremely difficult to format videos and pictures to the correct format. What I hear is that the videos and pictures need to be so small and short it is not a very useful function.

1 of 5 SanDisk Sansa e200 4GB Thursday, March 08, 2007
carelli_pk from Cleveland, Ohio
This thing only worked for 6 months, service support no help at all, they just want to get of the fone with you, no time to really help you. It stopped working with Yahoo music and had a an error that would not re start. They have not provided any service and will not except a return, kept asking me if I have orginal packaging. Why should that matter? If you want service and support buy something different

5 of 5 Highly Recommended Monday, January 15, 2007
Marisa from Clinton, IL
One of my friends had a Sansa and I had borrowed it and now I absolutely adore it and can't wait to buy my own. It's great if you want to watch music videos or shows. It is easy and simple to use. I think if your looking for an mp3 player this one is an excellent choice. You can even put pictures on it and create a slideshow with music.

A Customer from Stoney Creek, NC
Really enjoy using this new MP3 Player. I've only had it for about a week, but I already have all my songs loaded onto it. Haven't had a chance to upload pictures, or movies yet, but everything is pretty self explanatory! User Friendly...
