 Editor's Note
Produced by HBO, RED DUST stars Hilary Swank as Sarah Barcant, a human rights lawyer in South Africa. In the small town of Smitsriver, Barcant and her colleague, Alex Mpondo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), attend the trial of police officer Dirk Henricks (Jamie Bartlett), who is seeking to clear his name of atrocities committed when apartheid still poisoned the country. In an added twist, Mpondo was one of Henricks's victims. Packed full of drama and intrigue, RED DUST contains plenty of surprises.

| | Professional Reviews | Ultimate DVD 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he flash frames of Ejiofor's fractured memory are particularly effective and upsetting....It's a highly affecting film, steeped in moral certitude." 09/01/2006 p.201Three Imaginary Girls 8 of 10 Chiwetel Ejiofor's remarkable acting talents, not to mention his super-sexiness, are on full display in this compelling film about a former anti-apartheid activist and African National Congressman undergoing a Truth and Reconciliation trial in South Africa. Ever-amazing Hilary Swank plays his attorney, and we're told that her formative years in the grotesquely divided nation resulted in emotional scars. But (after the undeniably powerful denouement) I found myself wishing that director Tom Hooper had shown us whether they were anywhere near as profound as the physical marks Ejiofor had been forced to endure. Reel Film Reviews 7 of 10 Despite the best efforts of everyone involved with the film, Red Dust is nevertheless one of those movies that tackles a serious and important subject matter - but never quite becomes as compelling or intriguing as we get the impression it's supposed to be...a success in terms of providing a brief history lesson of an important moment in South Africa's history, though there's a distinctive movie-of-the-week sort of vibe going on here. However, Ejiofor continues to prove that he's got the charisma required of a leading man, while Hooper does try his best to infuse the story with bursts of style. - David Nusair
