4 of 5 Crisp Display Monday, March 07, 2005 A Customer from Rancho Santa Margarita, CA
Princeton's SENergy 714 is nice display with crisp clean colors at is maximum 1280x1024 resolution. Response time for this monitor makes it unsuitable for gaming. Otherwise, it's an excellent product. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 very nice monitor - good performance Tuesday, January 25, 2005 cbach1997 from Brea, CA
Great pixel response, good contrast ratio, good viewing angle, no dead pixels on the one I ordered! Great improvement over other Princeton offerings. Stand is well built and feels solid. Great for gaming - noticed no smearing with motion.
Highly recommended, especially at the price. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Outstanding value Saturday, January 22, 2005 SLOJES from SLO, CA
This is my second lcd monitor, the other being a Sony. Unlike the Sony that I went and saw in person in a store, I bought this Princeton SYNergy 714 sight unseen based on the reviews and the unbelievable price (after rebates). I could not be happier. It was deliviered for free in three days (on a Saturday). Plugged it in and began using it. I don't kmow about adjusting it because it doesn't need any adjusting. It is a perfect picture - the right brightness, excellent color, crisp text with no hint of ghosting and no dead pixels. I am using it with analog input, but it is nice that it also supports dvi. Also nice that it has height adjustment which it seems many monitors do not. Sorry, can't comment on the speakers as didn't bother plugging in. For features, and image quality at this price I don't think this monitor can be beat! I want another one! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great value for the price Friday, January 21, 2005 RhythmDoctor from Philadelphia, PA
Great value for the money. This is my second LCD monitor - I also have a Dell E171FPB, a middle-of-the-road budget LCD monitor that I have been happy with. Much of this review will compare the Senergy 714 with that Dell LCD monitor. I work in the color field, so I have a good eye for color. However, I do not use high-end equipment, so my comments are relevant for ordinary home/business users.
My wife became jealous of all the extra desk space I have, so she wanted a flat panel to get rid of her bulky CRT. She does not have a DVI connector, so I gave her my Dell LCD and bought this one for me, since my video card supports DVI. This is a true dual-input monitor, with a button to manually toggle between the DVI and analog inputs - so I can plug my laptop into the analog port without physically disconnecting my desktop, if I want to. Very nice for such a low price! And it comes with both the DVI and analog cables.
This monitor seems to be significantly more chromatic than my other Dell LCD. Red and orange are definitely more vivid (brighter and cleaner) than my other LCD, even when I cut back the backlight. When watching video off my TV card, skin tones are definitely richer than my other LCD. I have not checked green and blue to see if they are also brighter, but this LCD seems capable of getting richer colors than my other Dell monitor.
Somebody else mentioned that this monitor dithers to get some colors. As someone who used to edit 256-color GIF images, I nearly canceled my order when I heard about this. But I am glad I didn't. That description was an oversimplification. It's not ordinary dithering. The monitor uses 6 bits (instead of 8 bits) for each pixel layer of the LCD screen (each layer produces cyan, magenta and yellow), for a total of 18 bit color. If it supported 8 bits per layer (24 bit color), each layer would produce an intensity value from 0,1,2,3,4,...256. With 6 bits, each pixel layer only produces 0,4,8,12...256.
Here's where the so-called dithering comes in: If, for example, a pixel needs an intensity of 6 for cyen, then it flashes the cyan layer of the pixel between 4 and 8. But it does this so fast you can't see it! This is called "dynamic dithering." If you have a bunch of adjacent pixels with a cyan intensity of 6, some will flash 4 while the others are flashing 8. That's the only similarity to dithering, but you cannot see it at all. So don't worry about it. You won't notice the difference between this and true 24-bit color. But you will notice the faster response time if you play games or edit video.
I ordered my monitor on a Wednesday, and budget (free) shipping got it to me by Saturday. No problem meeting the 15-day rebate deadline. My unit had no dead pixels and no hot pixels - great quality. The speakers are terrible, but who cares? I already have good speakers. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 What a deal.........can't miss!! Thursday, January 20, 2005 C Parrish from Jackson, MS
I am the IT Architect for a Fortune 500 Company. I buy Dell and IBM all of the time. This Princeton LCD was absolutely flawless out of the box, DVI Picture is Excellent. No Worries, as good as any I have seen and the price was fantastic.
Don't let anyone discourage you because of the speakers, you are buying a MONITOR, of you want great sound, you have to buy better external speakers.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Can't wait to try the Princeton 19" Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Very, very good value Tuesday, January 18, 2005 Matthew Harmon from Palatine, IL
As a game programmer I am very picky about my monitors and I must say, this is a fabulous deal. It compares very well against my higher-end Planar. In fact, the image quality is almost as good. The analog sync is dead-on. Brightness and contrast are very nice. Refresh seems good as well. It's still not a CRT, but very nice.
The issue of interpolated color concerned me at first, but after testing it with color bars, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference. And in "normal" use, this isn't an issue at all.
No dead/stuck pixels. Frankly, I was not expecting such good performance at this price and have been very, very pleasantly surprised. For $225 AR, every programmer or video editor should pick one up to use as a second (or main!) monitor.
The only real drawback is a rather basic stand with no pivot or rotation. (The stand on the Planar is incredible.) Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great product with great value Monday, January 17, 2005 A Customer from Sunnyvale, CA
Good quality LCD display, clean-simple style. This
is the best $200+ product I have bough in recent
memory. 100% plug and play. The minor downside is
the build-in speaker. OK to play movie but not for
playing great music. Was this review helpful?

Just got this display a couple weeks ago and I absolutely love it. It was so good I went and got a new graphics card just so I could enjoy it more. I'm using the DVI cable and the picture is just incredible. I haven't noticed any difference in refresh times between this and the highend 17" CRT I used to have. This display is truly 17" corner to corner, which makes it feel like you're looking at a 19" CRT (which usually measure 17.5"). I just can't say enough good things about the display! I'm running a tv tuner in my computer and the output at full screen to the display is flawless. Once I get it mounted to the wall, it will become my permanent TV too! Only one dead pixel (glows green), but barely noticable when the monitor is on. Takes a few minutes to get it calibrated, but it is worth it! (Though it does run as soon as you plug it in, taking the time to calibrate it will improve your experience.) Colors are sharp and vivid. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Outstanding Monitor Friday, January 14, 2005 Pete from Sedro Woolley, Wa
This is an excellent monitor at a bargain price! Super bright and sharp, dual inputs are nice (use the digital if you can). Free shipping and I had it in about a week. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fantastic deal for LCD Wednesday, January 12, 2005 Iggy Sol from Atlanta GA
This is a great deal on a very good LCD monitor. I just got mine today and the screen is bright and the colors are crisp. I went from a 17" CRT to this 17" LCD and the LCD has a much larger viewable area and the resolution is much clearer. This runs at 1280x1024 and looks great, very readable. My old CRT couldn't manage much above 1024x768.
I was a little concerned when I first set it up, as text didn't look as sharp as I expected. However, it just took adjusting the screen refresh rate and now everything is perfect. No dead pixels. I was looking at Hyundai one, but it didn't have the option of DVI. I'm not using that yet, but I'm sure I will when I next upgrade my video card. And with a 3 year warranty, hopefully I will have this screen for a good long time. Was this review helpful?

1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 3 of 5 Good product @ Good price Tuesday, January 11, 2005 A Customer from PA
I expected good quality LCD that could be comparable to my Dell 18" LCD monitor,
but I found that it is not as good as dell's LCD monitor. First, the color of LCD image was changed even with slightly different angle (horizonally and vertically).
Second, I need to manually specify input line. my Dell LCD monitor automatically detect whether it is DVI or D-Sub. Because of this, I spend 15 minutes for initial set-up:-(
Third, the speaker sound was terrible. I think they should remove speaker and make it more slim.
Fourth, I found one dead fixel even though it is not crutial and it could be common to any other brand.
Fifth, I would have pivot function that is good for reading documents when we need to read papers.
I think if you really want good product I recommend Samsung or Dell LCD,
but you need to spend more money to buy it :-)
Overally, it's good at this price. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Love this Monitor !! Monday, January 10, 2005 A Customer from Manchester, NH
I got this last Saturday in the mail and I set it up right out of the box without any problem. I just plugged it in and was good to go right out of the box. I am using a digital input from my graphics card and it works like a charm. I am replacing my aging (but still useable) crt monitor. I can't say enough about this monitor, great screen quality and bright screen are tops in my book. The only bad thing is the speakers but I didn't buy it for that. It puts my crt to shame and with the 3 year warranty you can't go wrong. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 BEAUTIFUL!!! Friday, January 07, 2005 Doug M from Bountiful, UT
I've been waiting over a year for an affordable DVI 17" TFT panel with a 3-year warranty. I ordered one of these Princeton beauties just after Christmas. It arrived to my home in Utah from Ft. Worth in 2 days with the free shipping. To my dismay, it had a single hot pixel on it. A single hot pixel is covered under Princeton's excellent pixel policy (the best I've seen), so I ordered a second from Buy.com. It took about two days to ship from southern CA, but it arrived at my house in two days with the free shipping.

After letting it come to room temperature, I hooked it up. It's BEAUTIFUL!!! with no pixel anomalies whatsoever, and I looked carefully with several different solid screen colors.

I won't be gaming or watching movies on it, so I can't speak to that, but the screen is absolutely beautiful with the DVI input. ...crystal clear text, almost no backlight bleedthrough, and a beatiful, bright image. I'm 45 years old, and it's easier to read than my 17" CRT at 1024x768. I see no reason to pay more for a 19" LCD with the same resolution.

I viewed some television through my All in Wonder card, and the picture didn't look as good as on my CRT monitor when scaled to full screen. Bear in mind, the TV runs at lower than native resolution, so you'll have the normal LCD scaling issue as with any LCD monitor. If you want to scale the image, you'll have to get a CRT monitor.

All 16 ms monitors get their fast response time by using 6 bits/pixel for color (x 3 pixels per group, for 18-bit color), rather than 8 bits of the 25ms monitors. They use dithering to make up the difference in color. You should be able to set your display to 16-bit color when gaming to avoid the dithering.

It's an awesome monitor at an incredible price with the best warranty I've seen. I'm recommending it to everyone I know.

I'm going to RMA the first one back to Buy.com. $8.00 return shipping is acceptable to me to get a perfect LCD like this one. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 great LCD monitor Friday, January 07, 2005 A Customer from New Jersey
Great value and performance with dual inputs (DVD + VGA). Definitely a great purchase. It permits full adjustments and a simple "auto" setting too. Have not found any dead pixels yet. Was this review helpful?

It arrived in perfect condition via Fedex Ground. Installation was a snap -- no software necessary. It is many times brighter and crisper than my old 15" dell CRT. A vast improvement. I had to tone down the brightness setting from the factory levels. The plastic housing is a little cheap and flimsy, and the monitor shivers if I bump my desk. But, I don't expect stainless at this price level. No dead pixels. I haven't tried DVI yet. Was this review helpful?

I have been looking for an LCD for about 1yr. I planned on getting a 15in because I wanted a high quality DVI connection. Very bright and clear. Also has the great tilting funtions that none in this price range have. The speakers I agree are not steller but if this is for business use they do the job. They are compareable to the single speaker that comes in most business desktops now a days. I would not pay more unless you are a professional graphic artist that does prepress and needs exact color matching... I play some games, build websites and do basic video editing and normal web stuff. This monitor is all you need. The only thing better would be to setup two in a dual monitor scenario... 5 of 5 Great buy! Sunday, January 02, 2005 A Customer from Savannah, GA
The Princeton Senergy 714 with a rebate is a real bargain. The colors are vivid and picture crystal clear. Great for watching video. Super fast reponse time. Ordered with free shipping and arrived within four days. No dead pixels. The fact that a DVI cable was included is a plus. DVI cables can cost $30+. With a three year warranty included and a net cost of $xxx after the rebate, the Senergy 714 is the right choice for a 17" lcd dual input monitor. Did not have to adjust anything! Only complaint is that the speakers are weak, but was to be expected.I give it a 4.5 out of 5. Highly recommend. Get one before they are all gone! If you are in the market for a lcd, compare the warranty, reponse time (MS)and make sure has a DVI input. Contrast ratio is over rated. A ratio of at least 400:1 will be just fine. The Princeton monitor is very bright! You will not find a better bargain for a quality lcd monitor. If you are a gamer, the 16MS will keep up with your games. Good luck! Was this review helpful?

4 of 4 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Very Nice Wednesday, December 29, 2004 Dan from Gray,TN
I just received and set up this monitor. The screen is bright and clear. No dead or stuck pixels. I've been looking at LCD monitors for some time, but most just didn't seem very bright, or were washed out. Not this one. Looks great. The refreash rate is good, so I'm not expecting ghosting.
My only complaint is that the built in speakers are not worth having. I'll probably stick with my external speakers.
The price and delivery from Buy.com made this deal especially sweet. Was this review helpful?

I use this monitor primarily for entertainment. The biggest fear I had is that it would not hold up to "twitchy" games which is not a fear anymore. I have played a few good shooters such as half life 2 and have had no problems with the monitor keeping up with the speed (but I mostly play Worlds of Warcraft these days). The only thing that is marginal on this unit are the speaks, but then again, what should I expect from tiny build in speakers. No dead pixels, nothing to complain legitimately about in regards to this monitor, very solid for the price! Was this review helpful?

I ordered this shortly before Christmas and it was delivered to my door in less than 24 hours with standard shipping. I have not tried the digital input, but with the analog connection it produces a bright, clear image and fast refresh rate. I think it is a great buy, especially after the $75 rebate.
