Although her goofy, thrift shop sense of fashion made her seem like a cartoon character at times, Cyndi Lauper was one of the bright spots in the early days of MTV, and her songs displayed a sharp, savvy pop edge that has given the best of them a rare kind of staying power, and they've held up better through the years than most songs from the new wave era.
