| | Professional Reviews | Entertainment Weekly "[T]he often gasp-inducing footage takes on a startling vividness and depth." -- Grade: A 04/27/2007 127Ultimate DVD 5 stars out of 5 -- "PLANET EARTH is a sprawling look at our world and its wildlife, sumptuously captured by the most technologically advanced cameras." 08/01/2007 p.88 DVD Verdict 10 of 10 Simply put, Planet Earth is the new gold standard in nature documentaries. Produced by Alastair Fothergill and the BBC's Natural History Unit as a follow-up to their universally lauded oceanographic series, The Blue Planet, this 11-part examination of the majestic beauty of Earth's remotest landscapes and rarest species is guaranteed to take your breath away. The show offers a whirlwind tour of the planet, sweeping viewers in grand aerial shots from artic tundra to craggy mountains to surging deserts to rainforests and oceans teeming with life. Along the way we get a brand new glimpse of the life-and-death struggle unfolding daily in the wilds of our globe...Like all nature series, each episode of Planet Earth draws its dramatic intensity from the relentless struggle between life and death--and the show is, indeed, dramatically intense. Placid shots of achingly beautiful flora, fauna, and sprawling landscapes are juxtaposed against the never-ending contest between predator and prey. Planet Earth is absolutely riveting, but not for the feint of heart...It is the astounding breadth, scope, and depth of Planet Earth that makes it revolutionary. - Dan Mancini

5 of 5 Easily the best. Tuesday, April 28, 2009 A Viewer from Tallahassee, Fl
String as many superlatives together as you wish. This is now the standard for nature films. I'm looking forward to Disney's attempt to match or surpass it. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 One of the best. Tuesday, January 20, 2009 A Viewer from Herndon, Virginia
This is one of the most beautiful documentaries ever produced. BBC crew spent years making it and many scenes are astonishing.

5 of 5 Amazing - a must have for HD Monday, January 19, 2009 A Viewer from Philadelphia PA
This is amazing - and is a must for anyone with a 1080p HD tv. As I am an avid Discovery Channel watcher, I noticed that this was narrated by a guy; not the woman who narrated the orignal series that was televised on the Disco Channel. All shots are the same; however, all things are in BBC format (and are in metric sizes - it takes a little calculation but is very satisfactory). Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Monday, June 09, 2008 Dan from Chicago, IL
This was the reason I bought my 1080p...I used to see it in Best Buy and was always in awe. It's definitely the best blu-ray I own. Was this review helpful?

This should be everyone's first purchase after buying a blu-ray player or playstation 3. The 4 disks look incredible (a few scenes aren't in HD, though). It's also amazingly educational and addictive - TOTALLY facinating. It covers all aspects of the earth like shallow ocean, deep ocean, forests, desert, mountains, jungle, etc. Imagine seeing the most incredible nature scenes possible on earth. That's what this DVD series provides. Can't recommend it enough! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 awesome!!!!!!!!!!! Saturday, January 19, 2008 JohnnieG from New York, New York
This what Blu-Ray was meant to look like, better than any other Blu-Ray I have seen to date. Was this review helpful?

I saw a segment of this series on the Discovery Channel and instantly fell in love with it. The visuals were stunning and the narration was lively and funny. I was looking to buy it in Blu-ray and discovered that there were 2 versions; 1 from Discovery Channel and 1 from BBC. In doing more research, I found that the Discovery version is produced in 1080i format while only the BBC version is produced in 1080p format. They also have different narrators. I decided to go with the BBC 1080p version. WARNING: I have fallen asleep through each of the segments of the BBC version. Something about his voice just puts me to sleep. Aside from that, the program is wonderful. Was this review helpful?

I’ve seen parts of this spectacular series in the TV show room and on Discovery Chanel. The HD broadcast pales compared to the Blu-Ray (I’m sure the HD-DVD is great too) release. I happen to have gotten the original BBC release with the BBC narration which I find better than the DiscCh narration in that it is softer in the mix but still very understandable, I find the DiscCh narration much too loud/in your face/distracting. The music is great. Most of the footage is pristine and awesome, but certain areas push the limits of the encoding process, the immense bird flocks should have used less compression during the encoding process as both mosquito and block noise are evident, it is still very enjoyable none the less. If you enjoyed any of the broadcasts you’ll enjoy it on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD all the more. This is a must have for anyone with an HD disk collection. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A masterpiece Monday, August 27, 2007 Ruibing from Boston, MA
This is probably the best treat you can give your HD entertainment center. It really manages the capture those rare, majestic moments that makes you hold your breath even as you watch in your living room. It is truly beautiful. Highly recommended. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 This is an awesome series. Monday, March 26, 2007 A Viewer from NY
I just saw the first three episodes on the Discovery Channel and I was impressed. This was definately a high budget film. The capturing of the bird of paradise on film is worth the money. You won't regret this as this is some of the best nature footage you may ever see. Was this review helpful?
