It is a dark time as the age of piracy nears to a close. Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) of the East India Company has gained control of the terrifying ghost ship, the Flying Dutchman, and its malevolent, vengeful captain, Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). The Dutchman now roams the seven seas, unstoppable, destroying pirate ships without mercy, under the command of Admiral Norrington (Jack Davenport).

Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) embark on a desperate quest to gather the Nine Lords of the Bretheren Court, their only hope to defeat Beckett, the Flying Dutchman, and his armada.

But one of the lords is missing - Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), either the best or the worst pirate ever, and now trapped in Davy Jones' Locker, thanks to his encounter with the monstrous Kraken.

In an increasingly shaky alliance, our heroes, including Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), Pintel (Lee Arenberg) and Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook), must first travel to dangerous, exotic Singapore and confront Chinese pirate Captain Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat) to gain charts, and a ship, that will take them off to world's end, to rescue Jack.

But even if Captain Jack is successfully rescued, the gathering of the legendary Bretheren Court may not be enough to hold back the fearsome tide of Beckett, Davy Jones, and their powerful armada...unless the capricious sea goddess Calypso, imprisoned in human form, can be freed and convinced to come to their aid.

As betrayal piles upon betrayal, it becomes clear that Jack, Will, Elizabeth, Sao Feng, and Barbossa each have their own agenda, and no one can be trusted. Yet each must choose a side, and make their final alliances for one last battle, in a titanic showdown that could eliminate the freedom-loving pirates from the seven seas - forever.

"...astonishing special effects, superior to those of earlier installments in creating a wondrous and menacing world."  Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader
"Exciting...a wonderfully scenic medley of impressive action sequences..."  Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times
"More than ever, Depp masterfully keeps the enterprise afloat..."  Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter
"The most visually spectacular, action-packed and surreal of the adventures of Capt. Jack Sparrow..."  Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune
"Funner, biggerer, brighterer, bolderer...A lavish spectacle illuminated by Johnny Depp's swishing pirate captain..."  Stephen Hunter, Washington Post

Editor's Note

After the action of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST, anti-hero Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is trapped in the netherworld of Davy Jones's locker. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) has returned from the dead to aid Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) in their quest to rescue the beloved captain. They journey to Singapore to ask for help from notorious pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat), and with this new alliance, they travel to the edge of the earth to find Jack. Then they will join forces with the world's most powerful pirates to unite against Lord Brackett (Tom Hollander) and the East India Company.

AT WORLD'S END is an exercise in excess, boasting a running time of nearly three hours and a labyrinthine map of double- and triple-crosses. Characters return from the dead and change allegiances with ease, thanks to the magic of Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris) and the pirate code of ethics--or lack thereof. Though the third film in the series is filled with action and special effects befitting any blockbuster, it's the performances that make the movie memorable. Depp has earned an Oscar nod for his role as Jack, but he's not the only one who shines. With Jack locked away, the film sits on the strong shoulders of Rush, as well as Stellan Skarsgard as Bootstrap Bill and the brilliant British actor Bill Nighy as Davy Jones. Despite having to act behind a mess of CGI tentacles, Nighy nearly steals the show, as in the previous films UNDERWORLD and LOVE ACTUALLY. This is literally and figuratively the darkest entry in director Gore Verbinski's trilogy, as the film trades the sunny skies of the Caribbean for the world's most treacherous seas. There's plenty of rum-soaked humor, but it's balanced by betrayal and sacrifice.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2-Disc Limited Edition) - DVD Review

At World's End suffers from a snowball effect. Nobody expected much from Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. In fact, many chastised Disney for attempting to make a movie based on a video game ride. When Jack Sparrow and company proved to be so popular, it was only natural a franchise would follow, but the elements that made the first picture so special have grown to a proportion that robs those things of what made them special in the first place. ...read the full review

"When it comes to the final hour, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, delivers the goods. The last 60 minutes offer adventure as rousing as anything provided in either of the previous installments...Unfortunately, that doesn't account for the other 108 minutes of this gorged, self-indulgent, and uneven production. During the course of nearly two hours of exposition and setup, there's little in the way of charm or action. There are memorable moments, to be sure, but the overwhelming sense is that the film is desperately spinning its wheels trying to shock and awe with unexpected plot developments...Most Pirates aficionados won't complain (at least not too much). This is a chance to re-visit old friends and see where some of their stories end. It's a chance to sail with Cap'n Jack from death to life and meet his dad (played, as has been reported everywhere, by Keith Richards). The movie does enough things right that it won't leave scores of despondent fans in its wake." - James Berardinelli

Variety 7 of 10
"The third voyage in the ""Pirates"" trilogy could be touted as ""the biggest, loudest and second-best (or second-worst) 'Pirates' ever!"" -- not necessarily a ringing endorsement, but honest. ""Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End"" clocks in at more than 2' hours, but, unlike last year's bloated sequel, at least possesses some semblance of a destination, making it slightly more coherent -- if no less numbing during the protracted finale...Depp's fey, morally challenged buccaneer remains a kick and the pic's biggest asset...In musing about the Land of the Dead, Barbossa suggests that getting there isn't the tough part; ""It's getting back."" Given that producer Jerry Bruckheimer's crew unlocked the secret to spinning riches out of a theme-park attraction, in this case getting there was no small feat. It's returning there that has been something of a chore -- a course ""At World's End"" steadies but can't entirely reverse." - Variety.com [Brian Lowry

2 of 5 Don't waste your money Wednesday, December 26, 2007
A Viewer from Atlanta, Ga.

My wife and I bought and watched At Worlds End last night and were both dumbfounded. We could not believe that this is a sequel to the first two movies. It drags and appears to be a composition of out takes from the cutting room floor that someone decided to try and make into a movie. If you just have to have it, wait until it hits the $5.00 rack, which shouldnt take long. The only redeeming part of the movie was the battle sequence at the end of the movie. Other than growing into a 60 foot amazon, we are both still scratching our heads about what roll Calypso was supposed to play in the movie?

5 of 5 Arrrrgh.... here we go again! Thursday, September 20, 2007
Travis from Riverside, CA
At Worlds End provides the viewer with a deeper look into the pirate world, as well as "the locker". This movie had more of a psychological spin than the previous two, offering a refreshing look at pirate life and "beyond". As always, the cast gives a phenomenal performance all the way around. Offering action and surprises that only make you smile, At Worlds End quenches your pirate thirst and at the very last second, it leaves you thirsty for more. ARRRRRGH MATEY! Order this pirate "booty" now and ye will be first in line... or be lost to Davy Jones Locker, forever.
