| Author Bio| Paulo Freire | | Brazilian educator Paulo Freire has a lifelong commitment to literacy and education, and his influence has been international in scope. Freire came from a middle-class family that eventually fell on hard times. He attended law school, got a degree, and took a job in a welfare office. He received a doctorate in 1959. In 1964 he was exiled from Brazil for political reasons, and settled in Chile. His work with the World Council of Churches and then UNESCO brought him to the attention of Harvard University, which offered him a position. It is there that he wrote his major work, PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED. He returned to Brazil in 1979 and joined the faculty of University of Sao Paulo. LETTERS TO CHRISTINA is perhaps his most personal work. In letters to his niece, Freire explains his life and work. |
